Juicy and drinkable, mint leaf, tobacco, savoury blue fruit, cumin and incense, creamy as it opens up. This kept on delivering, really holding up over several hours of being open and enjoyed. No Malbec in rhe more ecent blends of Gruaud Larose, but this was during the beginning of vineyard restructuring under Suntory (owners since 1989) and a reminder of the 19th century years when this was the dominant grape of the Médoc. Tasted out of magnum, Philippe Carmaigac cellar master, 35% new oak.

Delivers fabulous aromas of crushed red fruits, with leather, tar, tobacco and mint. Full-bodied, offering supersoft and silky tannins, as well as a beautiful polish. Open and luscious, with amazing richness of fruit and decadence at the same time. (JS)

A classic, old school Saint-Julien, the 1989 Château Gruaud Larose offers a smorgasbord-like array of red and black fruits, saddle leather, cigar box, and smoke tobacco. Medium-bodied and nicely concentrated, with good mid-palate density, it's not the most elegant wine and still has some present tannins, but it sure brings plenty of character. It opens up nicely with time in the glass as well, and while it's unquestionably drinking at point, it certainly has another 15 years of evolution.

The 1989 Gruaud Larose is evolving very slowly, and its impressively youthful structure and vibrant flavors auger very well for its future. Offering up aromas of sweet berry fruit, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and cedar, it's medium to full-bodied, with a rich core of fruit, lively acids and fine but still present tannins. As this develops in the cellar, it's showing more plenitude and mid-palate volume than it did a decade ago, and for patient readers this is emerging as a comparatively underestimated 1989 Médoc. There are few things in Bordeaux more rewarding than opening a beautifully mature bottle from a great vintage, and the 1989 Gruaud Larose is a wonderful reminder of why we collect these wines in the first place. Gruaud Larose was on an extraordinary run throughout the 1980s, producing some of the most memorable wines in the château's long history. The 1989 is another terrific example of what made this era so special, and it's particularly exciting to have it available as a recent ex-château release, with impeccable provenance and more than 35 years of age. What I love about mature Gruaud Larose is how its unmistakable character evolves over time. The 1989 brings together an inviting combination of cassis, dark cherry, cedar, tobacco, and worn leather, with hints of spice and the savory, earthy complexity that makes aged Bordeaux so compelling. The palate retains an impressive core of fruit, but it's the structure that really makes this wine. The tannins have softened beautifully while maintaining definition, and a lovely thread of acidity keeps everything fresh and lively through a long, nuanced finish. The celebrated 1989 vintage produced some of Bordeaux's most memorable wines, and Gruaud Larose offers a particularly compelling look at the more traditional side of that remarkable year. There's a wonderful balance of maturity, character, and vitality here, and with its recent ex-château provenance, this is precisely the kind of opportunity that lovers of mature Bordeaux shouldn't miss.

Notes

Classified as a second growth in 1855, Château Gruaud-Larose occupies a gravel plateau in Saint-Julien. The 1989 vintage dates to the estate's ownership by the Cordier family, before its acquisition by the Merlaut family in 1997.
