From the smallest of the three monopoles at roughly 292 cases, the 2023 Volnay 1er Cru Clos D'Audignac Monopole is a much more classic expression compared to the 2022. Red fruits, blood orange, flowery incense, and beautiful spicy notes all shine on the nose, and it's round and supple on the palate, with soft tannins and a rounded, charming, expressive style that's already drinking nicely. Aged 12 months in 20% new French oak followed by six months in stainless steel, it's a lovely, satisfying Volnay to enjoy over the coming 10-15 years. Drink 2026-2041.

A perfumed and elegant nose freely reveals its aromas of mostly red berry, anise and exotic tea. The caressing and punchy middle weight flavors possess a highly refined mid-palate texture that contrasts moderately with the raspy and borderline chewy finish. (Drink starting 2031)

The classics are classic for a reason. That's the adage that comes to mind when I think of La Pousse D'Or. Benoit Landanger makes wines built on precision, fine tannins, measured oak usage, and, quite simply, beauty! The 2023 Clos D'Audignac is the perfect embodiment of these principles. Of all the 2023s we tasted, this was the one I found truly entrancing. I'm sampling it now for the 3rd time, first at noon, and now at 6pm, and the bottle continues to unfurl new depths of enjoyment. The aromatics are gorgeously expansive and draw you in, while the palate is powerfully focused with excellent concentration, while remaining fresh all along through to a long finale. It's a wine that will reward a few years squirreled away, but can absolutely be enjoyed young, as I've been doing all day today!
