Yet another remarkable wine from Marcos Eguren, the 2014 El Puntido Gran Reserva is from a small portion of El Puntido planted to high-density trellised vines. There’s a pure expression of the site from the special selection of grapes that led to long aging before barrel fermentation and 28 months of aging in new French oak Bordeaux barrels. The wine was bottled in March 2017. The vintage was difficult because of rain falling 10 days before harvest, but the result here is a bright wine of considerable acidity that tastes fresh and alive in lovely strawberry, raspberry, and dried herb, with understated, full-bodied weight and breadth. Drinking beautifully now, it shows the ability to shine another 10-15 years. (VB)

A slightly more ethereal expression of Rioja despite the rich, dark fruit with cloves and a mossy, citrusy character. A bit of savoriness with forest floor as well. On the palate, this is firm and lightly chewy with nice fluidity and a long, fresh finish. 100% tempranillo. Aged 28 months in new French oak.

The 2014 Gran Reserva El Puntido was aged for 28 months in new Bordeaux barrels of French oak and shows developing tertiary complexity. Aromas move from herbs and vine blossom to wild cherry and fresh plum, with subtle aging notes, olive tones and thyme from the oak. With more time in bottle, integration deepens, while lively acidity and fine tannins shape a silky, agile palate. Transparent and nuanced, it already suggests the cooler character of the vintage. Rioja is unlike any other wine region in the world, famous for cellaring wines far longer than nearly any other region in the world. And the best part is that these perfectly matured wines are released without the premium you might expect. Another great example of this tradition is the the 2014 “El Puntido” Gran Reserva Rioja. This gorgeous wine is made by the acclaimed Eguren family, whose vineyard-driven wines have helped define modern Rioja – some of their other well-known wineries include Sierra Cantabria and Señorio de San Vicente. The “El Puntido” comes from a single vineyard of the same name, planted in 1975 at approximately 600 meters in elevation. This 100% Tempranillo balances the concentrated fruit you’d expect from a high density, old vine vineyard with the freshness and mineral-driven character of Rioja Alavesa. A somewhat challenging vintage makes this bottling all the more impressive: the Egurens’ rigorous selection and meticulous sorting have produced a wine of impressive elegance. Aged for 28 months in new French oak and nearly a decade in bottle, it offers an enticing mix of ripe plum, wild cherry and blackberry, layered with cedar, tobacco, coffee beans and dark chocolate. The palate is full-bodied but graceful, with supple, well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and a long, polished finish. This is Rioja for those who appreciate the rewards of maturity, combining the richness of modern Tempranillo with the savory complexity that arises over years of aging. With fantastic scores from the critics, including 98 points from Jeb Dunnuck, and a price of just $89.99, this is a fantastic opportunity to put a serious, cellar-worthy Rioja from one of Spain’s great wine families on your table.

Notes

Viñedos de Páganos’ El Puntido is a single-vineyard Tempranillo from Páganos, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, created by the Eguren family. The Egurens have been growing grapes and making wine in Rioja since 1870, and their reputation for identifying exceptional vineyard sites has made them one of Spain’s most influential wine families. Led by brothers Marcos and Miguel, the family is behind such acclaimed projects as Sierra Cantabria, Señorío de San Vicente and Teso La Monja in Toro. Their philosophy is rooted in the belief that great wine begins in the vineyard. El Puntido takes its name from a 25-hectare vineyard planted by their father, Guillermo Eguren, in 1975, at roughly 600 meters above sea level near Laguardia. Its calcareous-clay soils and high-elevation setting lend Tempranillo an appealing combination of ripe fruit, freshness and mineral complexity. El Puntido has since become one of the family’s flagship Riojas, offering a compelling expression of the precision, pedigree and vineyard-driven approach that have made the Egurens so highly regarded.
