2024 Domaine Henri et Gilles Buisson Saint-Romain "Sous La Velle"

Sous la Velle is preeminent among the numerous delights in the Buisson cellar, and the 2024 is up to the usual standard, with pronounced aromas of lime zest, gooseberry and a salty mineral edge. The texture is tense, with lively acidity, but there is enough body and richness to balance the wine; a delightfully pleasant hint of bitterness lingers on the finish. This 2.5ha site faces due east at an elevation of 370m; it is the classic cuvée of this notable domaine. (Drink between 2028-2045)

In a word? Enrapturing! In a paragraph? Here goes: Why can't I stop smelling this glass? That's the honest first note I wrote on the 2024 Sous la Velle. There's an indescribable character my favorite Chardonnays tend to share. A sort of restless energy, matching tension and freshness stride for stride with weight and texture. This has those characters in spades. Electric aromatics, that gorgeous flinty reduction the best young white Burgundies wear like a glove, and underneath it lime zest, crushed stone, and salty ocean-air. Discoveries like this are why I adore wine, and why I took this job. Huge fan. I bought it for the store and then I bought it for my house!
