As ever, rock solid Margaret River cabernet, ticking the boxes for all the right regional and varietal qualities as it goes along. Just on the full side of medium-bodied, the flavours of cassis and cedar build on the palate, escorted along by the fine but firmish tannin that rolls on through the finish to linger in the aftertaste. Enjoyable now or for years to come. (SC)

Brooding and showing plenty of soul, with its savoury plums, black spice and anise, framed by super-fine tannins. Fine-boned and seamless length. *2021 Decanter World Wine Awards*

This has aromas of brambly ripe dark berries and plums that intersect with cedar, leaves and cocoa powder. The palate has such smooth, fluid tannins and delivers ripe dark-berry flavors in abundance

The subtle and understated 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon estate delivers exceptional drinkability thanks to pretty aromas of violets and redcurrants with gentle leafy, sage complexity, and oak sitting behind. Vibrant pure cassis flavours are then well matched to a fine line of al dente tannins that draw out a long, slippery finish. (AH)

It's not every day that you come across a mature example of Cabernet Sauvignon from a benchmark region at a price that seems too good to be true. With nearly a decade of bottle age, the 2017 Clairault Cabernet Sauvignon is a rare opportunity to taste a wine well into its aging journey, without paying the premium to do so. Clairault also happens to be one of the original wineries in Margaret River, a region that is well known today as worldclass for producing Bordeaux-inspired wines. A medium-bodied style of Cabernet that is almost reminiscent of “old school” Napa, this wine is decidedly more savory that fruity, brimming with tertiary notes of graphite, fallen leaves and dusty gravel. The core of red current and red plum fruit remains, although slightly more dried in nature versus juicy, along with dried oregano and thyme. The acidity is still refreshing and bright, however, and the alcohol is just 13.5% -- a comparatively lean style of Cabernet compared to flashier, more modern examples. The tannins are also very well-integrated and supple at this point, enhancing the easy-drinking nature of this wine, and the oak has completely receded into the background, allowing the other aromas to weave together without being overshadowed. I’d suggest decanting this wine for an hour or so to let the complex tertiary aromas to fully unfurl. It would be fantastic served alongside so many cold weather dishes – everything from roast chicken or beef stew with button mushrooms. And at just $14.99, it’s well worth picking up a few bottles or even a case to have on hand for the holiday season.

This bargain bottling has a very deep and dark hue. I initially received a nice dose of licorice pastille with violet (the French ones that used to come in the beautiful little tins) and red cassis with a little earth. On the palate, quite mouth coating, with, as everyone else is saying, rich cassis. In my case, dark red cassis. There are also elements of dried orange peel, mellow wood, dried herbs, earth and carryover anise/licorice. The weight and dark red/black fruits say "new world", the earth/wood, etc., say "old world". A nice dose of both worlds for an incredibly low price! Give it a try!

Notes

Clairault is one of Margaret River’s longstanding producers, with its original Wilyabrup vineyard planted in 1976, making it part of the region’s formative generation of wineries alongside more famous names such as Vasse Felix, Cullen, and Leeuwin Estate. Located along Caves Road, the estate has since grown from a modest four hectares into a family-owned operation encompassing nearly 200 hectares across four vineyards in Wilyabrup, Yallingup and Karridale. The vineyards’ varied sites and maritime climate allow Clairault to produce classic Margaret River varieties, particularly Cabernet Sauvignon, while the older vines and diverse soils provide considerable depth and character. Today, Clairault remains an important custodian of Margaret River’s early viticultural heritage, combining its historic vineyard holdings with a modern focus on sustainable farming and site-driven wines.
