This brand-new bottling under The Anonymous Wine Collective is just beginning to come into its own. Bottled only a few months ago, it’s really starting to shine! The wine comes from two famous, highly regarded vineyard sites in the Petaluma Gap AVA, part of the broader Sonoma Coast. This is a truly special growing region thanks to the constant cooling breezes that funnel in from the Pacific through a gap in the coastal ranges. That relentless wind plays a fundamental role in producing world-class grapes: it naturally reduces yields and concentrates flavor, slows ripening to build greater complexity while preserving natural acidity, and encourages thicker grape skins that contribute texture and structure to the finished wine. Combine all of that with the region’s rocky volcanic soils, which lend a lively mineral character, and you have the magic of Petaluma Gap. This wine had so much natural flavor and concentration that we decided nine months in mostly neutral French oak was more than enough to frame the fruit. It simply didn’t need any additional “makeup.” The quality of the vineyards and the fruit speak for themselves. The result is a classic coastal California Chardonnay, with beautifully crystalline golden orchard fruit, fresh, stony minerality, vibrant acidity, and subtle, seamlessly integrated oak nuances. Fruit from these vineyards typically goes into single-vineyard-designate wines selling for $60-$80 a bottle. By keeping the source Anonymous, we can bring it to you for just $20. Cheers!

In this unique confluence of scouring breezes, coastal mountain terrain and refreshing Pacific fog the vines produce ripe, fleshy fruit embellished with sublime acidity. An ideal terroir for Chardonnay, and the perfect culmination of aromas and flavors that make this Petaluma Gap wine shine— the vibrant palate reveals comice pear, yellow apple, tropical fruits and creme fraiche flavors that will beautifully complement a dish of seared scallops or pork tenderloin.

Do you like your Chardonnay crisp, clean and minerally? Or do you prefer it with some oak influence? A touch of brioche or fresh lemon curd? With the new Anonymous Petaluma Gap Chardonnay, you don't need to choose. This wine is fresh, with crystalline purity. But has hints of toasty barrel fermentation, ripe tropical fruits and burnt sugar. The key word here is balance.

This impressive new release from our Anonymous Collective series continues the streak of excellence we've become accustomed to. When I read of it being aged in 30 percent new barrels, I expected prominent oak flavors. To my surprise, this outstanding Chardonnay is quite the opposite. It combines fresh acidity and minerality with a wonderful texture and delicious honied orchard fruit. And, it's only 19.99.

Notes

A stunning bottle of Chardonnay from one of the most famous vineyards in the region, offered at a price that is almost unheard of. That’s the power of Anonymous. I was incredibly excited to get this wine into bottle and into your hands after tasting through barrels with the winemaker earlier this spring. The final blend we put together comes almost entirely from a famed vineyard owned by one of the most prestigious growers in the region. We could easily have bottled it as a single-vineyard wine, but one experimental blend incorporated a couple of barrels from a very rocky mountainside block, and we absolutely loved the extra tension, energy, and minerality it brought to the wine. The wine was entirely barrel fermented, with 30% new French oak providing a sophisticated frame for the fruit without overwhelming its purity or sense of place. Wines from these vineyards and this producer typically sell for three times the price of this Anonymous Wine Collective bottling. Better still, we were able to taste through the cellar and hand-select our favorite barrels for the final blend. This is exactly why we created Anonymous: access to extraordinary vineyards, top-tier winemaking, and wines that would normally command a much higher price, all offered at a fraction of what you would expect to pay.
