James Suckling

Reviewed January 2025
This wine is more restrained than fruity, with aromas of dried flowers, cinnamon, youthful red cherries, balsamic, earth and minerals. Full-bodied on the graceful and powerful palate, with super-polished tannins and refreshing acidity in the finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2027.

The Poderi Luigi Einaudi 2021 Barolo Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi is already silky and glossy in texture with a beautiful entry to the palate. There is a long slide of cassis and wild cherry followed by soft violet, sweet almond and licorice. Those Terlo tannins are firm but not excessively so, and the wine's texture is poised to become ever-more silky in time. Production is 5,053 bottles and some larger formats too. (ML)

Rich and fleshy, this red boasts cherry, strawberry, earth and eucalyptus aromas and flavors. There's density but also vibrant acidity driving the lingering conclusion. Shows fine overall balance, with refined tannins. Best from 2029 through 2048. 445 cases made, 50 cases imported. (BS)

Blue flower, truffle, menthol, rhubarb and cedar aromas slowly take shape on the 2021 Terlo Vigna Costa Grimaldi. It’s full-bodied and polished, featuring ripe cherry, cranberry, star anise and blood orange accompanied by taut, fine-grained tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it well balanced. (KO)

Terlo is a classic expression of the Barolo village, known for producing wines that are both powerful and elegant. The soil is composed of Tortonian blue-gray marl, which imparts a distinct minerality and complexity. Expect a wine with a full body, smooth but present tannins, and an aromatic profile of licorice, earth, and floral notes that evolve into darker fruits and spices. It's a structured and age-worthy wine that beautifully represents the traditional style of the area.

Notes

Sourced from the historic Costa Grimaldi parcel within the Terlo cru, this 2021 Barolo from Poderi Einaudi displays the structure and depth characteristic of this southwestern-facing site. Aged in large oak casks following fermentation in steel, the wine offers intense aromatics of black cherry, violets, anise, and iron. On the palate, it’s broad and muscular, with dark fruit, crushed herbs, and a savory mineral core wrapped in firm yet ripe tannins. A powerful, age-worthy expression of Terlo with excellent cellaring potential—best from 2026 through 2045.
