Reviewed January 2021
The 2019 Corton Grand Cru Cuvée du Bourdon is especially promising this year, delivering a complex bouquet of red berries, raw cocoa, rose petals and sweet soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, layered and lively, it's vibrant and concentrated, with powdery tannins and a saline finish. It's the usual blend of 60% Les Paulands, 20% Les Perrières and 20% Clos du Roi. Domaine Ponsot started picking on September 20, and winemaker Alexandre Abel reported yields some 35% to 40% below average, with alcohols in the 14s and healthy pHs at around 3.3. Yet while alcohols in 2019 were if anything higher than in 2018, the 2019 wines are more elegant, with livelier fruit tones and less overtly muscular structure. That's not a criticism of the 2018s, however, which we revisited from bottle, confirming that they are wines that will require patience: interestingly, the most put-together of the range was the Clos de la Roche, a cuvée that was bottled last, in July 2020, and which certainly seemed to have profited from the longer élevage. Burghound

A brooding and decidedly reluctant nose features a plethora of Corton-like elements including wild red berries, underbrush, earth and a whiff of the sauvage. The medium weight flavors are at once rich yet reasonably precise and more mineral-driven before culminating in a muscular and solidly complex if firmly structured and youthfully austere finale. This is definitely firm, but the supporting tannins are already well-integrated.

Purchased fruit from three locations: half from Paulands, 35% from Perrières and 15% from Clos du Roi. The grapes are given the 'Ponsot treatment': picked ripe, fermented on wild yeast with no sulphur and aged in used casks. The result is lovely, with bright red fruit and floral aromas, a supple, silky texture and lovely length. (CC)

Notes

90-93 points Jasper Morris Inside Burgundy: "Paulands, Clos du Roi, Perrières (a half, a quarter and a quarter, respectively). This wine is fermented at slightly lower temperatures, a technique which has worked well on the Chapelle-Chambertin. Mid crimson, this is rather oakier than the Morey wines. It starts discreetly then builds to significant weight with a little bit of a crunch behind. Sound wine though it is not quite shining today." (10/2020)
