The 2018 Côtes du Rhône is 100% Syrah, sourced from the Gard (on the right bank of the Rhône) and Vinsobres (left bank, higher elevation). Violets, black olives and cassis and blueberry flavors provide terrific varietal expression in a medium to full-bodied package framed by silky tannins. (JC)

Starting out the reds, this estate makes a terrific Côtes Du Rhône that’s produced in solid quantities. The 2018 Côtes Du Rhône, which has already been bottled, is a no-brainer for a house red and offers lots of peppery dark fruits and herbal notes, medium body, good freshness and purity, and just tons of upfront charm. It’s mostly Syrah and ideal for near-term drinking.

It's unusual to see Syrah-led blends coming out of the southern Rhône but this has become one of the signature wines of prestigious Gigondas producer Château de Saint Cosme. The fruit comes from the Vinsobres appellation in the northern part of the southern Rhône and the terraces of the Villefranchian subregion on the Gard side of the Rhône River. Imbued with the full flavor and richness that Syrah provides and from this exceptional 2016 vintage, you can't go wrong with this pleasing and intense French red.
