2018 Cellier des Dauphins "Réserve" Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1460912 97 points Decanter

This is delicious! Very classy and appealing aromas of flowers, garrigue, spice and forest floor. On the palate sweet vanilla oak marries into the charming and svelte herbal, red and blue fruit mix. It's full of flavour, super supple, super drinkable and authentic. Bouquet, taste, finish: all are magnificent. (DWWA) (4/2019)

K&L Notes

The Union des Vignerons des Cotes du Rhone is an association of growers that established their cooperative in 1965. Now 2300 members strong, they cover a range of some of the best Village and Cru appellations in the Southern Rhone. The Cellier des Dauphins label was created shortly after the inception of the winery in 1967. It has remained one of France's benchmark Rhone brands for decades. It has seen little exposure though outside of the country... until now! The "Reserve" bottling is a blend of best parcel selections composed of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah. With its forward fruit and classic flavor profile, this will become one of your favorite weeknight wines.

"Oh my that smells incredible" was all I could utter among first sniff. One of the best value wines to land on our shelves in the past few months, this CDR from Cellier des Dauphins is sure to impress. This wine is hyper-fragrant with a combination of fresh red fruit, rich dark berries, pepper, violets, and enough earth to compete against all of that. The palate is sweetly-fruited, a little spicy, silky, and of a fairly delicate mouthfeel that will lend itself well to all sorts of drinking activities: a casual dinner, time with friends on the patio in warm weather, a post-work glass, the opportunities are endless! Do yourself a favor and come purchase a cart full of this 97-pointer before it's all gone.

I didn't know what to expect from this wine at the outset, but wow is it impressive. Immediately after opening this wine was perfumey and full of dark stewed fruits. Marionberry and deep black cherry dance and flit about with violets with hints of chewy tobacco. The palate is lively and expressive with a delicious and ripe acidity that doesn't overshadow the fruit and earth. With a medium to light body this wine has all the promise of summer with all the delight of spring and for under $15 this is an absolute stunner of a wine.

The Cellier des Dauphins is one of our best new values. Classically made from sourcing fruit from some of the top Village and Cru appellations in the southern Rhone, this is a harmonious and delightful wine. It carries brambly red and black fruit flavors intermingled with pepper and spice. The nice confiture of red fruit on the palate makes it all the more pleasing. This is a beautiful textbook Rhone that will rapidly become your favorite weeknight wine.

If you are looking for a wine with substance and flavor that will deliver much more than its price point, look no further. Made primarily of Grenache (60%) and the remainder Syrah, this is a scrumptious blend of black cherries, raspberry and blackberries but it's the abundance of garrigue and spice that draws me in. Balance is key here, with acidity, tannins, fruit vs earth notes and a lingering finish all wrapped up in a charmingly-styled bottle of deliciousness. Fill up the car! This will be gone before you know it.

You can go to another store and sift through a sea of underwhelming wine options. But - and this is one of the many things I love about K&L - here, we consistently have a large quantity of outstanding wines for under twenty dollars. This Côtes Du Rhone is no exception. What a pleasing balance of 60% Grenache and 40% Syrah! The 2018 Cellier des Dauphins "Réserve" is spicy, fruity, and medium-bodied with notes of strawberry, pomegranate, and raspberry. The graceful palate unveils good roundness, dense tannins and an elegant structure, plus hints of spice and pepper. This aromatic wine is made for food, but is also good if you're just hanging out with some friends after a long week of work.
