2017 Domaine Lafage "Novellum" Chardonnay

SKU #1408894 92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Coming from 100% Chardonnay that was aged on Viognier lees, the 2017 Vin de France Novellum boasts sensational notes of ripe citrus, white flowers, and spice, with loads of classic Catalanes salinity and obvious minerality. Aged in 15% new barrels, it’s medium-bodied, has remarkable purity, integrated acidity, and is a total steal at the price. Drink it over the coming 2-4 years. (11/2018)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The medium-bodied 2017 Novellum Chardonnay ages on Viognier lees for textural enrichment, plus 15% of the volume spends a month in new oak (the rest stays in steel). Pear and melon fruit up front give way to crisp notes of tinned pineapple on the finish. (JC) (4/2018)

Another knockout release from this knockout producer, Jean Marc Lafage punches at a heavyweight class but for a featherweight price. This Chardonnay, aged for a short period on some Viognier lees for a little aromatic boost, has wonderful notes of golden delicious apples, peaches and white flowers. It has a creamy texture that leads you towards buttery but never pushes you over the cliff. A delight through and through that won't put you down for the count.

Novellum is always a runaway hit for us, but the newly released 2017 stands out as even better than the last vintage! Less tropical than before, this year crunchy pear and golden apple fruit take center stage. While oak is definitely there, it feels better-integrated, and adds texture through to the finish. Like most Lafage wines, Novellum isn’t subtle, but it if balanced, and if you’re looking for a showy, creamy Chardonnay at a bargain price, this is it.

As an unrepentant Chardonnay enthusiast, I was pleasantly surprised by just how much I enjoyed this wine. For a mere $10 you get a wine that truly captures the charm of Chardonnay. It has plenty of bright apple and pear on the nose. The palate is greeted by more fresh fruit but eventually, the creamy nature of the wine takes over. There’s enough acidity to keep it bright and fresh. This is a perfect mid-week wine that can be enjoyed on its own or with well-prepared simple dishes.

This well-priced Chardonnay is beloved by a wide cross-section of customers as it sees only a kiss of new oak and delivers a round, creamy texture, sumptuous fruit and perfectly integrated acidity. It's great on its own or with food and the flavors and freshness keep you coming back for more. An impressive and affordable white that exceeds expectation.

Varietal:

Chardonnay

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, Mâcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.
Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
