2018 Langoa-Barton, St-Julien (Pre-Arrival)

SKU #1407979 95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Beautifully textured and rich in blackcurrant flavors and tannins, this is a generous wine. The fruits and the dusty tannins partner each other well giving structure, concentration, a sense of poise and final freshness. Drink this wine from 2026. (RV) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

94 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Ruby red in colour, with clove aromatics. Firm tannic structure, without having the 360-degree reach of the 2016s, but this is an enjoyable, well-balanced and well-judged St-Julien with power but careful extraction. Bright berry fruits, a little austere - at least right now - but plenty of potential. (JA) Inner quote mark (11/2020)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Currants, cloves, graphite and cigar box on the nose. Some pine and citrus zest, too. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, tight-grained tannins. Structured and vivid with plenty of tension. Lovely sweet fruit at the finish. Try from 2025. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Ripe and focused, with a lovely core of steeped plum, fig and cassis notes laced liberally with graphite and applewood. A violet note chimes bright on the finish. Absolutely rock solid. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2021)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Langoa Barton is slightly shy at this nascent stage, revealing wonderfully pure, warm red and black currant scents with nuances of blueberry preserves, chocolate mint, smoked meat and a waft of bouquet garni. Full-bodied, rich and sporting a lot of vibrant, juicy fruit in the mouth, it has firm, rounded tannins and a lively backbone lifting the fruit to a good, long finish. (LPB) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

90-93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark I was really impressed with the 2018 Langoa Barton. Fresh, floral and silky, with tremendous fruit purity, the 2018 is delicate and understated to the core. Langoa is always one of the most gracious wines of Saint-Julien. The 2018 has an extra kick of textural resonance that makes it incredibly appealing and delicious. The 2018 is an especially fine Langoa Barton. Tasted two times. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

92 points Jeb Dunnuck

Outer quote mark Made by the stellar team at Léoville Barton and a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, and the balance Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Château Langoa Barton sports a deep ruby/purple hue to go with a charming, medium to full-bodied, velvety-textured 2018 with terrific notes of red, blue, and black fruits as well as spice box, dried flowers, and a touch lead pencil. It has surprising up-front appeal, with ripe, velvety tannins and nicely integrated acidity, and it's going to shine with just 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 20+. Inner quote mark (3/2021)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Black core. Intense, small-berried wild black fruits. A very nice combination of dark fruit and savoury black olive. Firm, dense and compact in tannin structure but not tough or drying, just very tannic. The second time I tasted this it seemed more supple. Even with these obvious tannins, there's freshness on the very end. (JH) Inner quote mark (4/2019)

K&L Notes

91-93 points Neal Martin for Vinous: "The 2018 Langoa Barton was picked from 21 to 24 September for the Merlot and 29 September to 6 October for the Cabernet, then matured in 60% new oak. It has a high-toned and voluptuous bouquet with blueberry, crème de cassis and pressed violet aromas. It is very Margaux-like in style. The palate is very smooth and sensual, the multi-layered black and blue fruit with a saline undercurrent. It is floral on the finish, very seductive." (11/2019)

Very lively aromas of oak, vanilla and bright Bing cherries jump from this when poured. This big wine is fresh and minty with sweet red fruits, earth and bright berries. Although deep and structured it is racy, clean and fresh and has a forward and bright personality.

This wine was one of the most impressive of the 2018 St. Juliens that we tasted. I was very impressed by the graceful combination of subtle cola and tense cassis on the classy nose. The round, red plum fruit in the mouth was very attractive, as was the soft, rich finish. It is composed of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc.

We think St Julien may be the best region in Bordeaux for 2018 (what else is new?) and this is always a value in the region. Tasted four times with consistent notes, this wine is precise and pure with a black cherry cola aroma and long sweet palate impression. A steal for sure.

Tasted at Leoville Barton during En Primeur week. Very expressive, bursting with bright briary red fruit, licorice, cola and cranberry, with even a touch of orange. Very expressive and bright with great acidity, and well extracted tannins for great ageability. 13.85% abv.
