2010 Glen Garioch 8 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $50)

SKU #1387612

This property in Oldmeldrum has a reasonable, albeit disputed, claim to being the oldest legal producer of whisky in Scotland. It officially dates back to 1797 and traditionally it has been a quite heavily peated malt. In the 1990s, under the ownership of Beam Suntory, after a period of closure, Glen Garioch reopened and started producing the unpeated whiskey they're known for today. Even without the peat, Glen Garioch managed to retain lots of richness and it's distinct waxy tallow and spice. This 8 year shows just a smidge of faint smoke, a beautiful saline minerality and a focused richness. There is a pretty, white pepper note on the palate and a sweet back end. At full proof, it has power, and with a little water it shows more intricacy.

Delicious and interesting. This bottling is very complex with a sweet and savory flavors that complement each other. There is a nice dry finish and the sweet and dry aspects work well together. There is lot going on in this unique and tasty single malt.

I'm an absolute FREAK for Glen Garioch. There isn't a ton out on the open market and the stuff we used to see has become extremely expensive. The malt is highly prized by the blenders for its exceptional highland character. Although it's not well known to the generally public still, it commands a premium and rightfully so. I recommend you try to separate the seemingly young age statement from this whisky when evaluating it. Absolutely nothing tastes like Glen Garioch and this one deserves to be judged without the preconception of age. The nose is gorgeously old school - with big inviting malt, deep earthy wood, a complex mixture of sweet and savory aromas. On the palate that "almost" peaty feeling adds complexity and nuance. Snappy malt, but not sulfured, it exhibits a gorgeous texture and unsurpassed purity. With water it becomes truly the quintessential eastern highlander. The malt is on display offering a tense aromatic battle between expensive teas and spices, complex fruit and earthy dark malt. On the palate the feeling of fresh peat (not smoke at but actual product) is on full display. There's absolutely nothing in the store that taste anything like this special whisky and for people who are truly enamored by top quality distillates in their most pure form, you'll definitely appreciate this special bottle.

A scotch for the rum lovers! This 8 year old reeked with notes of agricole: funky banana, grassy, and then the floral jasmine, smoked honey, scotch notes come in to remind you what you’re actually sipping. The flavors were a bit more traditional, straying from the rebel nose notes that almost had me fooled. Sweet cream and a light floral component floated across the palate leaving a warm, tingly sensation on the tongue before fading into a dry finish.

Some folks balk at a relatively low age statement like 8 years. In whisky, as in life, it's often best to not judge a book by its cover. This wonderful Suntory owned property puts out tremendously high quality juice, but receives relatively little attention in their portfolio behind crown jewels like Laphroaig, Yamazaki, and Hakushu. This whippersnapper of a whisky has some feisty spicy notes of pepper, ginger and a bit of cinnamon bark. These piquant flavors mellow gracefully into a more melted butter, rich cream, and decadent vanilla middle. A smidge of lemon zest and pudding brighten up the finish. It turns out that at 8 years, this whisky as matured enough to hang with its older friends, but still shows a little bit of the fire of youth. A precocious adolescent.
