2015 Branaire-Ducru, St-Julien

SKU #1362275 95 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2015 Branaire Ducru is a gorgeous, totally sexy wine. Rose petal, lavender, mint, sweet red berry and gently spiced notes give the wine much of its gracious, lilting personality. Precise and nuanced to the core, the 2015 Branaire is all class. It's easy to overlook Brainaire in the context of Saint-Julien, where most of the other important wines are much more powerful. Branaire always speaks with a hushed, discreet voice. Readers who appreciate finesse will find much to admire here. The 2015 is a wine of pure and total sensual pleasure. In 2015, the blend is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 26% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, aged for 18 months in French oak, 60% new. Don't miss it. Tasted two times. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2018)

95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark This family-owned estate has produced a structured and dark wine with great concentration balanced by acidity and pure, creamy fruit. It is a wine with a good future. The aftertaste leaves juicy acidity and firm tannins. Drink from 2025. (RV) Inner quote mark (2/2018)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This pumps lush fig, boysenberry and blackberry confiture notes along, pushed by a rather polished but ample structure. Lots of anise and violet details cascade in on the finish, giving this extra aromatic dimension. Best from 2020 through 2038. *Top 100 Wines of 2018, No. 33* (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2018)

93 points Decanter

Outer quote mark The 2015 main bottling, as with the 2nd wine, has an approachability, an accessibility and a warmth to the fruits, with touches of grilled smoky oak. This is lovely, it has a good freshness to it and keeps the fruit bouncing along right through the palate. Less intensity than the 2016, but lots to enjoy and again the effortless balance of the appellation. Drinking window 2025 - 2040 (JA) Inner quote mark (12/2018)

93 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark More open than many 2015 St.-Juliens at this stage in spite of the firm, dry tannin structure behind the bright cassis. The tannins need some integration, but with some patience (from 2021 or 2022), this will become a rather fine wine. Inner quote mark (2/2018)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2015 Branaire-Ducru has an earthy nose over a core of red and black currants with hints of tapenade, pencil shavings and sage. The medium-bodied palate is firm and chewy, with just enough fruit and a lively finish. (LPB) Inner quote mark (2/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Pale to mid crimson. Quite evolved and complete. Sweet start and a bit scrawny. Some green notes. A bit all over the place. Round and resolved on the palate. 16+/20 Inner quote mark (5/2019)

K&L Notes

92 points, Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "The 2015 Branaire-Ducru has a refined and elegant bouquet with more red than black fruit: wild strawberry, damson and a touch of pencil lead as it shifts up the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured and firm with spicy black fruit laced with cedar. There is a touch of compactness toward the final third, completing what constitutes a very refined and satisfying Branaire-Ducru." (02/2018)

The 2015 Branaire Ducru is a textbook perfect example of a magnificent Saint-Julien. The ripe fruit nose and palate profile is full of cassis, plums, pencil lead and cola. The fruit is framed by its perfectly ripe tannins. It is a very pleasant experience to drink this now, but make no mistake, this wine will easily last another 20 years or more. So, a couple of cases in the cellars, and some bottles on the wine fridge are in order...

This property next to Chateau Beycheville produced a smooth, rich and somewhat sexy wine with plenty of underlying structure and tension. For now lush black raspberries and sweet cherries take center stage along with flowery aromas, but there are touches of smoke, spice and earth poking through the creamy middle.
