2008 Tobermory 8 Year Old "John Milroy - K&L Exclusive" Single Refill Butt Cask Strength Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $50)

SKU #1358498

This crazy little Tobermory is exactly what I love about the strange little distillery on the Isle of Mull. It was filled into a used sherry butt in 2008. This distillery sometimes gets a bad rap, in particular because the independently bottled stuff is usually filled into 4th- and 5th-fill cask. The slightly feinty style of the malt really needs some higher quality oak to be softened enough to release its complexity, but once it does it can be an absolute treat. There's no question that Tobermory has the potential to provide incredible depth and enjoyment, but it's often a challenging whisky not necessarily designed for the novice. This particular cask represents that dichotomy perfectly. Second-fill sherry butts are perhaps the perfect vessel for this funky spirit, adding and taking from the whisky in perfect balance. As expected this whisky is as fun and funky, but it also represents one of the starkest examples of the benefits a few drops of fine spring water to a quality single malt like this one. It's nearly mandatory with something this youthful to at least try it with a few drops of water and thank god we did because this thing absolutely transforms. What was once hard edged and idiosyncratic is now opulent and enlightening. There is complete turnaround in the glass and one of the most unique and exciting drinking experiences we can ever offer at any price point. An odd yet beautiful whisky that will appeal to the real malt geek.

I'm just totally in love with some of the stuff coming from Milroy these days. Doug McIver has great taste and although his style tends to be rather restrained, he more than makes up for it with intriguing, beguiling casks like this one. Tobermory in refill sherry sounds like a solid recipe even at this young age and nothing about this whisky disappoints. That said, it does start out a bit rough and tumble and needs a bit of coaxing to really open up. In the glass it's the perfect golden hue. The nose does start a little intense with the slightest feinty funk, pithy dried citrus peel and green woodsy herbs. On the palate, the texture is creamy. The earthy malt and bright citrus dominate. It builds toward a spicy, slightly roasty finish. Now Stop! Don't take another sip. Grab some good spring water and add a healthy few drops. Watch this whisky transmute! Now an explosion of ultra ripe yellow plums, roasted spices and flinty Riesling-like fruit. The palate broadens and softens, opening on to orchards of citrus and stone fruit trees and the honey from their bees. The structure on the palate is wonderful and we start to get hints of vanilla fudge and roast pecans which remind us that this cask did indeed hold sherry once. The finish is medium long and refreshing. It's a bit dangerous when you can't stop smelling your empty glass. Altogether an instructive and enjoyable journey down the rabbit hole and another great summer whisky from Milroy. We're very lucky to be the exclusive retailer for this product in California.

Super fruit forward, almost coconutty, with a touch of oak flavor. I love this bottling because it is simple, yet so fruity. A great summer Scotch or the perfect bottle for the Speyside love who wants to try something new.
