Masotti Napa Cab - back again and bigger and bolder than ever! Last year when we introduced the Masotti wines to our customers there was a scramble to snatch them up at the crazy prices we secured and we expect the same this time around, too! If you missed the 2021 Masotti Cab here's the scoop - These wines are crafted by Mitchell Masotti whose day job is making wines at Bevan Cellars! Mitchel has worked alongside luminary Russel Bevan for more than a decade and works with some of the finest fruit around the valley. Clocking up more than a dozen 100-point wines under the Bevan label, this guy knows how to make rich, powerful, crowd-pleasing wines! The 2022 Napa Cab shows the forward and decadent style of the vintage with ripe dark fruits, blackberry, plum, boysenberry hints, too. Dark roast espresso beans, hints of sweet oak spice, new leather, hot stone. Soft, round tannins meld with lush fruit, it's a real mouthful of of easy drinking Napa goodness. As even sub-$50 Napa Cabs become ever scarcer, we backed up the truck at this super sharp price. However, once folks start buying it by the case there's no telling how long it will last.

Anyone who loves champagne should try this exceptional bottling! The Acuité from Michel Arnould is a great example of top grower champagne at a wonderful, accessible price. The seamless blend of two of the top grand cru villages in the region (Verzenay and Mesnil no less!) gives us beautiful hazelnut and baguette toast as well as super clean minerality and lively acidity. While this is labeled as an Extra Brut, the wine is balanced like Brut and comes across as dry without being austere. I cannot overstate just how good the balance is of this wine- it is impossible to get tired of and reminds me of tete de cuvée!

Château Canon has been taking off over the past few years, and here you see why. Just so much complexity, depth, power, interest in the whole thing. This buzzes with life, rises above the palate, full of gunsmoke, truffle, raspberry, blueberry, so delicious. This is a red wine that transports you to your favorite bistro in Dijon or Paris. One with paper on the tables, wooden chairs, and mirrors on the walls, sipping a glass while awaiting your steak au poivre and a tangle of frites. It's immediately charming and totally irresistible. If you've ever wondered where Burgundy keeps its secrets, drive fifteen minutes south of Chablis and you'll find Irancy, a south-facing amphitheater of Kimmeridgian limestone with fewer than 200 hectares of vines and fewer than fifty growers, every one of them making red wine on soils the rest of the world associates with oysters and Chablis. The climate has done Irancy a favor the Côte d'Or might envy: the amphitheater now ripens Pinot comfortably most years, slopes once written off as too cool are being planted, and the village sailed through the 2016 and 2021 frosts that gutted the rest of Burgundy, so the wines have gone from lean and angular to genuinely delicious without losing their chalky northern minerality. The Cantins have been farming here for generations, and Benoît, who bottled his first solo vintage in 1994 with his father Bernard still at his side, works 16 hectares spread across ten of the village's lieux-dits. "La Grande Côte" is sourced from a steep slope that tumbles toward the Yonne River and faces south-southwest so the Pinot soaks up every hour of northern sun, making this cuvée is the fullest and most structured Irancy in Benoit's range. In 2023, vibrant and pure-fruited aromatics leap out of the glass, immediately calling you for a second sniff. Wild fresh berries and fresh violets on the palate all coil around a chalky, beautifully fresh core. Who knew Red Burgundy under $30 could be this compelling?

This is a very classically structured Bordeaux with blackcurrant, walnut, cedar and hints of toasted oak. It’s reserved now, but shows very serious, polished tannins. Persistent and powerful with fantastic length. Very precise.

It's quite rare to find good grower Champagne at this price, but this is convincing. Based on Pinot Noir from the grand cru village of Verzenay, it's persistent, pure and bright, with tangy yellow apple, clementine and apricot fruit, and a gentle, chalky firmness. Precise and pure; excellent value. (TH)

Aromas of dried lemons, grapefruit, beeswax, seaweed and pears. Excellent focus, with a compact, driven and mineral palate. Biscuity touches, evolving to hints of pie crust, too, on a long finish. Drink or hold.

Charismatic lemon curd, ripe apricot and apple pie laced with sweet vanilla. Exceptionally juicy and luscious with zippy citrus acidity and a lengthy saline persistence. (2026 DWWA)

The appellation 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley is terrific and well worth seeking out. Coming from 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, and tiny amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it reveals a ruby/purple hue as well as a Graves-like nose of darker currants, scorched earth, leafy tobacco, and iron. Ripe, round, and seamless on the palate, with medium-bodied richness, it has beautiful tannins and outstanding length. This beauty is well worth seeking out and can be drunk any time over the coming 15 years.

The 2022 Pinot Noir Peake Ranch Vineyard is tighter and more focused, with juicy black cherry and redcurrant fruit as well as some sappy, floral, and forest floor-like notes. This medium-bodied, focused, beautifully balanced 2022 will benefit from a year or two of bottle age and keep nicely through 2034. 94+

The 2016 is naturally a little more subdued but there's an aromatic complexity with earthy, dark fruit notes. The palate is juicy and fresh with good persistence, the tannic frame powerful but the tannins finely honed. This is clearly a wine for ageing and will reward a little patience. A blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.5% Merlot, 2% Petit Verdot, and 0.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2019 Rauzan-Segla has a deep garnet-purple color. It storms out of the glass with powerful notes of crème de cassis, juicy black plums, and Indian spices, giving way to fragrant touches of incense, dried roses, and dusty soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of flavors of spicy black fruit preserves, framed by velvety tannins and impressive tension, finishing with great length.

This is a fascinating showcase of how graceful Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon can age. Now 15 years old, this bottling still shows complex aromas of roasted strawberry, ashy wood, mashed olive, espresso bean and damp mushroom. The palate remains as fresh as many new Cabs, with polished tannins offering dark fruit, dried porcini and bittersweet cocoa flavors. *Editors' Choice* (MK)

This wine is concentrated, with aromas of Boysenberry, Black plum, baking spices, brown sugar, and dried potpourri on the nose. The flavors on the palate are baked plum, black strawberry, cardamom, sliding into orange zest, dried herbs, and a dry finish. Pair with your weekday meal.

This is a blend of vineyards, including two-thirds from vines about 20 years old in the Los Lingues zone, towards the foothills of the Andes in Colchagua, and one-third from the Marchigüe zone, also in Colchagua, but further west. The combination of the herbal and fruity notes with the fierce tannins from Marchigüe's granitic soils gives rise to a wine that’s fruity and fluid, yet has enough body for charcuterie.

Deep, dark and hearty aromas of black cherry, blackberry and spicy vanilla show on the nose of this bottling. The palate is much more sprightly and refreshing with acid-washed flavors of raspberry, hibiscus and white pepper. (MK)

Felipe Camarena honors his roots with the G4 Blanco Clásico, a limited throwback release that nods to the earliest days of the brand. This vintage-inspired bottling combines 90 percent of G4’s signature Blanco with 10 percent fiber-fermented tequila, adding an extra layer of complexity and authenticity. The agave used for this release comes from fully mature, 8-year-old Blue Weber plants, bringing a level of sweetness and depth that recalls the sought-after “XM” edition. Everything about this tequila reflects Camarena’s uncompromising standards. It is crafted at El Pandillo using stone ovens, mechanical tahona extraction, a 50-50 mix of spring and rainwater, open-air fermentation, and double distillation in copper pot stills. The small addition of fiber-fermented juice contributes vegetal tones, savory depth, and textural nuance to an already polished base. The bottle features a faithful reprint of G4’s original 2012 label, marking a return to tradition and a celebration of four generations of agave mastery. With only 2,016 cases produced, it is both a collectible and a standout sipper. Whether enjoyed neat or in an elevated cocktail, this release reaffirms G4’s place among Mexico’s finest artisanal tequilas.

The quality of the fruit and tannins are very pretty here. It’s full-bodied, with round velvety texture and a delicious finish. Very impressive.

Wilderness Trail is one of those places that has always felt a little like Willy Wonka. On one of our first visits, we got the tour from Dr. Pat himself, and we have been smitten ever since. They have done some amazing things, and while I'm still not quite sure why Campari purchased the distillery, this whiskey was made by the original team back in 2020. These older single barrels have finally turned the corner and are showing so much depth and unique character. Let's have a look. A classic auburn hue (1.5). The nose explodes with dark berry fruit, blackberry and cherry, plus loads of graham cracker, honey, leather, medium-roast Colombian coffee, hints of earthy herbs, and bitter bark. The palate is almost like cherry cola and Dr Pepper mixed together, with dark dried plums, cherry, vanilla, and cola nut. This is one of the more balanced WT barrels we've tried, but it is still bold and spicy, with the big green herbal notes and baking spices coming in on the finish to clean it all up. An absolutely delicious barrel, seemingly determined to prove the thesis that was proposed in Danville one day many years ago.

The 2023 Pinot Noir Sonoma Coast is a deeper red color and is both layered and muscular, evoking the windswept, exposed place from which these wines are created, with notes of cranberry cocktail, black raspberries, and savory saltiness. It has broad shoulders, with ripe tannins and a floating feel, finishing with floral notes. It has depth and complexity, and it’s warming, with dark minerals and a savory feel on the finish. Drink 2025-2040.

A new, and welcome, permanent member of the core Kilchoman range, this comes from a mix of sherry finished and sherry matured whisky. The nose kicks off with a lovely cigar ash note—a cigar club toward the end of the evening—and while there are some dried fruits from the sherry, Kilchoman’s gentle, light character gives energy and lemony lift—shellfish, grass, and herbs. Lovely balance. Rounded, softly fruity, and highly approachable. (DB)

The 2021 Brunello Di Montalcino Vigna Montosoli captures the identity of this site with clarity and tension. The nose is lifted and pure with wild strawberries, red cherries, mint, thyme, roses, graphite, and tea leaf. Medium-bodied, it has tightly coiled tannins and brisk acidity, finishing with bright orange peel, mineral drive, and mouthwatering salinity. I found across my tastings that 2021 was an exceptional year, especially with regard to Montosoli, offering fabulous transparency of site, and this is a benchmark example for readers to snatch up. It’s going to require some patience, but it will have a lot of aging potential over the next 20 years. (AF) 98+

This pre-release bottle tastes so tight and intense with very firm tannins, vivid acidity and bracing bright red fruits, together with savory, cedary accents and minty, bay-leaf and earth nuances. It’s built for the long haul, but so fresh, appetizing and focused that it’s approachable now. Full-bodied. Best from 2028. (JG)
