2008 Bodegas Muriel Reserva Rioja
Review Date: 4-8-2014
This is a delightfully vibrant and bright Reserva, with high tone raspberry and cherry fruit. The spicebox aromas range from cardamom to cinnamon with the lovely scent of clove added for good measure. There is ample acidity here which makes this an ideal pairing with food. Perfect for paella, roasted fowl and all things pork.

2012 Niepoort "Docil" Loureiro Vinho Verde
Review Date: 3-9-2014
Bright, clean and snappy on the palate. This is a more amped up version of your standard Vinho Verde. Notes of meyer lemon, mandarin orange and crunch minerality, it has just a touch of CO2 for a nice zippy finish. One of the best versions of its kind and at an exceptionally low price!

2012 Patrick Piuze Chablis Grand Cru "Bougros"
Review Date: 2-26-2014
One of the highlights of our recent staff tasting, exquisite balance and focus with mango, lemon zest, spicebox and a long mineral finish. This is a persistent wine that continues to grow on the palate. Great now, but should age well for a few years.

2012 Anko Torrontés Cafayate Valley Salta
Review Date: 2-24-2014
Beautiful salinity to this wine with jasmine and lime blossom aromas. Great flavors of lemon verbena, passion fruit and satsuma oranges persist on the palate. Beautiful acid balance keeps it focused and never cloying. Hands down my favorite Torrontes on the market. Try it with Indian food!

2012 Mönchhof Ürziger Würzgarten Riesling Kabinett
Review Date: 2-14-2014
Delightful nerve and intensity to this wine. With candied pears, mango and Meyer lemon flavors. This just hums on the palate with finesse and a silky texture. Is it a cliche to say "pair this with Asian foods?" I think not because it would be absolutely perfect.

2011 Foley Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
Review Date: 2-4-2014
Loads of raspberry and cherry fruit with a lovely spicebox quality. Notes of cinnamon and clove as well. This is clean and fresh Pinot Noir that says, "I am from the Santa Rita Hills and proud of it." Nicely balanced and delightful with food. Pair it with some duck legs braised in wine and cherries. Yum!

2011 Foley Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay
Review Date: 2-4-2014
Tropical notes of papaya, mango and pineapple lift the nose of this clean and expressive Chardonnay. It also has a rich texture but enough bright acidity to keep it focused, plus it has toasty notes that are in no way overdone. This is the "just right" expression of Central Coast Chardonnay and a pleasure to drink.

2012 Sandhi Santa Barbara County Chardonnay
Review Date: 2-4-2014
Sashi Moorman and Raj Parr have hit it out of the park with this outstanding expression of Santa Barbara County Chardonnay. Long on ripe pear and apple flavors there is a vibrancy to the wine that lingers on the palate. Dare I say mineral? Having recently tasted their '13s out of barrel, I can say without a doubt there are many great things to come from this duo.

2011 Château de la Charrière Savigny-les-Beaune Blanc "Vermots Dessus" Domaine Yves Girardin
Review Date: 2-2-2014
Loads of green apple with crunch minerality, allspice and cardamom notes. Medium to full bodied for chardonnay but with the vibrancy of 2011's acid structure. Great now but forget a couple of bottles and open them 2 or 3 years down the road for a fantastic treat.

2011 Château de la Charrière Bourgogne Rouge Domaine Yves Girardin

Very elegant high tone red fruit here. Love the vibrancy of the wine with its cranberry and strawberry flavors. Bright acidity and a little bit of grip balance the wine. A terrific value!

2012 Farmers Jane "Field Red" Mendocino County Red Blend
Review Date: 1-30-2014
I'm a sucker for Carignan and also a sucker for the wines coming from Farmers Jane. Native yeast ferments and old vine fruit, two of my favorite things. The Carignan is sourced from 85-year-old vines at Hawkeye Ranch in Mendocino County, and the Grenache portion comes from Santa Barbara County. Fresh red fruit flavors of crushed raspberry and wild strawberry jam. This has terrific balance and wild flavors. Get on board now before these wines reach cult status.

2012 Farmers Jane "Field White" Santa Barbara County White Blend
Review Date: 1-30-2014
It's hard to put a face or definition to the new "Natural Wine" movement but I think that Farmers Jane is a great place to start. All native yeast fermentation, following the biodyanmic calendar and sourced from a single vineyard, the 2012 is a blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Roussanne. The source and blend may change year to year (last year was Chenin based) but each wine captures the integrity of what the producers are trying to accomplish. Pure expression of time and place. This Rhone blend is vibrant with great natural acidity (white Rhone varieties tend toward flabbiness), persimmon, baked apple and peach flavors. I can't wait to see what else they get up to.

2012 Alta Maria Vineyards Santa Maria Chardonnay
Review Date: 1-30-2014
Pure, clean Chardonnay fruit with lots of apple and citrus fruit. This has really nice weight. Unadulterated Chardonnay, it's what we should all be drinking.

2012 Dragonette Cellars Happy Canyon Sauvignon Blanc
Review Date: 1-30-2014
Always impressive and consistently one of my favorite SBs produced in the US. The Happy Canyon bottling reminds more of great white Bordeaux with its cantaloupe and citrus rind flavors. Lemon custard and papaya round out the flavors. Focused and finessed, this is a great expression of the region.

2011 Bernabeleva "Navaherreros" Garnacha Vinos de Madrid
Review Date: 11-18-2013
I thought this was a dead-ringer for Gigondas. Beautiful black cherry fruit that does haven't the dried quality you find in a lot of Rhone wines. It is fresh and deep. The wine also possesses that musky pipe tobacco quality which I find extremely engaging. This wine fires on all cylinders with a lengthy finish.
