The aromatics are a little more contained than the Napanook, knitted down with savoury incense and charred sandalwood, and a texture that even visually is rich and supple. Through the palate, things move slowly and deliberately, tobacco, musk, ocean spray, iris, with layers of sweet red liquorice, olive tapenade, latte, crushed rocks, broth, cranberry, just a beautifully crafted wine that is so enticing you could drink it now, but that promises to reward long ageing.

Superbly aromatic, polished, and balanced. Tannins are plump, pliant, and extremely long, with a beautiful velvety quality. Ripe blackberry, spiced plums, and black cherry fruits are super-expressive and imbued with this spicebush note, which is a shrub bush that grows near the vineyard and, when crushed in the palm of your hand in the thick of summer, reveals a high-toned minty-citrusy note, which is very present on the palate. The minerality is perfectly expressed as iron and stone, and the finish is exceedingly long, nuanced by mocha, loamy earth, and wildflowers, and resolves with tremendous freshness. Just splendid. Aromas of blueberries, ash and stones with hints of blackberries, orange peel and chocolate. It’s medium-bodied with medium-round tannins that are polished and velvety but always in check. Cedar and baking spices like nutmeg on the palate. Lovely soft and silky texture with a long finish. Enchanting and delicious. 92% cabernet sauvginon, 4% cabernet franc and 4% petit verdot. From organically grown grapes. Drink now or hold.
Bid on this bottle of 1987 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (96RP, 94JG, 92WS). Wine Advocate: "There were 6, 500 cases produced of the 1987 Dominus. It is one of the great wines of the vintage in a year when a handful of California producers made profound Cabernets (i.e., Robert Mondavi Reserve, Dunn Howell Mountain, and Chateau Montelena). The wine is beginning to shut down, but it still displays a rich ruby color and an intensely spicy, fragrant nose of toasty vanillin oak, cassis, and cedar. In the mouth, this medium to full-bodied wine displays considerable tannins, fine integrated acidity, and an opulent, rich, spicy finish. (RP)" (10/1993)

Bid on this 2-bottle tasting lot; including 1 1984 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (94JG, 92RP) and 1 1985 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (92JG, 91RP). Of the 1984 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend, John Gilman writes: "... I have always loved this vintage of Dominus and this most recent bottle was absolutely singing, offering up a deep and classy bouquet of red and black cherries, a touch of menthol, cigar smoke, a beautifully complex base of Rutherford soil, fresh herb tones and a judicious base of vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, complex and tangy, with a fine core, still a fair bit of tannin left and superb complexity and grip on the very long and impressive finish. One of the finest vintages of Dominus from the first decade of the winery’s existence and still with tons and tons of life ahead of it." (06/2021)

Bid on this magnum of 2013 Dominus Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend (1.5L) (100DC, 100JS, 100RP, 100VN). Vinous: "The 2013 Dominus overwhelms all the senses with its magnificent overall balance and towering intensity. Deep and nearly impenetrable in the glass, the 2013 boasts off the charts dry extract and overall power. Violets, smoke, black cherries, menthol, incense, crème de cassis and dark spices are some of the many signatures that take shape in the glass. Even better in bottle than it was in barrel, the 2013 is utterly magnificent. This is a remarkably vivid, nuanced wine considering its sheer size. (AG)" (10/2015)

The 2023 Dominus is a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. Opaque purple-black in color, it slowly unfurls to reveal a powerful core of blackcurrant jelly, ripe black plums, and fresh blueberries, followed by hints of menthol, crushed rocks, dried sage, black truffles, and black olives. The full-bodied palate is both generous and energetic, displaying an impressive array of savory and earthy nuances among the dense black fruit layers and a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins and beautiful tension, finishing with epic length. (LPB)
Beautifully enticing, it has developed notes of red currants and boyenberry fruit wrapped in tobacco leaves, tinged with vanilla. Mineral-scented Bing cherry fruit and impressively floral notes abound on the palate, with medium-bodied richness and excellent and expressive building tannins that fuel this robust red. For all its robustness, it has an unbelievable lightness to it. It's a balletic red of power and grace with great freshness. (JC)

The 2023 Othello is a tasty entry-level bottling from the front blocks on the property, those on either side of Hopper Creek. Juicy dark red fruit, cinnamon, new leather and cedar are pushed forward in this delicious, effortless Cabernet Sauvignon. Best of all, this should be a fabulous value, too. (AG)

Founded by Christian Moueix, Dominus Estate is rooted in Napa Valley’s historic Napanook Vineyard in Yountville, a site with viticultural origins dating to the 19th century. This winery-direct library collection brings together the 2001, 2006, and 2017 vintages in a six-bottle presentation, offering three distinct points in the estate’s history.
Blending the best of French savoir faire with the brilliant fruit purity and ripeness of Napa Valley, Moueix has turned in another tour de force that seems far superior today than it did when it was first released. This is one of the vintage’s greatest wines. Dense purple and youthful, with a glorious nose of earth, blackcurrants, sweet black cherries and incense, the oak is pushed way in the background, as it is in all of the Moueix wines, and the result is a wine of terroir, of great originality and authenticity. This full-bodied classic from Dominus can be drunk now, but really won’t hit its prime for another 4-5 years and last at least another two decades or more. (RP)
Composed of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the stunning, full-bodied 2010 Dominus boasts an exceptional perfume of hoisin sauce, licorice, underbrush, forest floor, plums, black currants and jammy cherries intertwined with hints of cedar, baking spices and oak. Full-bodied and voluptuously textured, the 2010 is on a slightly faster evolutionary track than the 2009 (somewhat of an anomaly for these two vintages). This exquisite as well as prodigious 2010 can be drunk young, but it should age effortlessly for 20-25 years. Bravo!

(RP)' (10/2013) 99 points James Suckling: 'A Cabernet-based red that’s all about the finish. Shows phenomenal character of caramelised orange, berries and lightly toasted oak. It’s also wonderfully structured, with great tannin, fruit, and acid balance. ' (06/2014) 98 points Vinous: 'The 2010 Dominus is one of the unquestioned stars of the evening."

Pre-Arrival
The 2001 Dominus is one of the most backward wines of the vintage. Readers who own it will have to be patient, as the 2001 needs a few years to still be at its best! Time in the glass brings out huge dark fruit along with hints of iron, gravel, spice and leather that add to its brooding, imposing personality. The 2001 is approachable with a few hours of air, but is very much a powerhouse. Boris Champy was the winemaker, while Jean-Claude Berrouet was the consulting winemaker. (AG)
