The 2025 La Conseillante is another brilliant wine in the making for this Pomerol reference point. Wafting from the glass with aromas of ripe mulberries and blackberries mingled with hints of violets and truffle, it's medium- to full-bodied, deep and unctuous, with lively acids, ultra-refined tannins and a long, floral finish. It's a blend of 87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon (from new plantings that already make it into the blend) that attained 13.5% alcohol. Fermentations were capped at 26 degrees Celsius, the coolest ever, to extract selectively, and the entire production is maturing in barriques this year. (WK)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2005 La Conseillante, Pomerol (98DC, 97JD, 97RP, 97VN, 97WS, 96W&S, 95JA, 95JG, 95JS, 95TWI). Decanter: "Superb primary nose of cola, bramble, blackcurrant and a lifted note of iris. On the palate, flavours of graphite and sweet cherry mingle with dense, fine grained tannins. So juicy and sweet with a touch of cola, iron, ink, earth and truffle following. Unusually, this had been aged in 100% new French oak barriques because of the ripeness and power of the vintage. Yet there is barely a hint of oak in this superbly refined, complex and elegant wine, which seems so sprightly, fresh and vital. The overall effect is one of amplitude without heaviness, not to mention superb balance, complexity and length. Deliciously enjoyable now but this wine will continue to age and improve for decades."
