A spellbinding Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 ‘Monte Bello’ was initially blended from 30 lots in the Monte Bello Vineyard. From a slightly cooler vintage, the 2023 has a slightly larger portion of Merlot (9%) added. It offers cool wintergreen notes on the nose alongside sandalwood, orange bell pepper, and fresh sage that combines with shades of boysenberry compote on this intoxicating nose. The palate is lush and round with a terrific mouthfeel and loads of mouth-watering finesse. Showing stunning length, this beauty really needs a year or two in the bottle before savoring. The Giacomo Conterno 2014 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is made with 100% fruit from the Francia cru, which is not the case for the 2015 vintage (that sees 22% Arione in the blend) or likely future vintages. In a sense, this 100-point wine represents a milestone or a chapter finale in the long and exciting trajectory of Italy's collected and revered Monfortino. I've had the great fortune of tasting this wine from barrel over the course of four years and twice again this summer during my visits to the Conterno estates (in Gattinara and in Monforte d'Alba). Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey's two 85-year-old parcels sit close to the border between Puligny and Chassagne-Montrachet. Aged in 50% new wood, the resulting wine has fresh, floral, white flower and tangerine aromas, focused, chiselled acidity, leesy palate weight and scented, toasty oak that will fold into the wine over the next year or two. The 2016 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Corbeaux has a very different aromatic profile than the Les Evocelles: this is more masculine and introspective, yet still very complex. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannin, perfectly judged acidity, understated and elegant with a cheeky touch of cassis popping up on the finish. Divine, but it will require a few years in bottle.(NM)

I simply love this wine, last vintage, this vintage, probably every vintage, a mostly Grenache-dominant blend that works its magic in mysterious ways. Medium-bodied and aged 21 months in neutral oak, there's so much bright red fruit here, but also licorice, white pepper, sap, and a butcher shop's worth of meaty aromas and flavors. It evokes summer in Provence amidst fields of lavender, simply perfect in its ability to charm and intrigue. Give it some time and drink 2028-2043.
