The dark-hued Cents Vignes shows mulberry and cassis fruit with notes of rose petals and earth. There is an impressive depth of flavour on the palate, good density for the vintage, and firm tannins. The 1.20-hectare holding is among the jewels in this portfolio. The vines were first planted in 1959; in 2021, the yield was 15hl/ha. This wine should drink young will doubtless improve in bottle for at least a decade. (CC)

From the south-facing slope in Nieve, the 2018 Barbaresco Gallina Vursu was aged for 20-22 months in French oak, of which 20% was new and the remainder second-use. This wine has an incredible lifted perfume of crushed roses, candied raspberry, cedar, and menthol. Polished, with pure and confected cherry fruit on the palate, its tannins take a long time to emerge and show the wines structure, which is warming with baking spice. Drink 2024-2042. (AF)

Follows Bailey Carrodus's method of co-fermenting small amounts of viognier, marsanne adding floral notes, and mataro adding spice. It's another exquisite wine from '17, capturing all the senses immediately you assess the bouquet and palate. It's only just into medium-bodied territory, but it's mouthwatering in its intensity, red fruits flying high like a gaudy scarlet kite. Special.

A classic blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 18% merlot, 8% malbec and 4% petit verdot. Hand-picked and sorted, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, on skins for up to a month, matured for 12 months in French oak (35% new). This is the serious side of '17. The aromas and flavours are still fresh and vibrant, but the palate, in particular, brooks no argument: this is a wine for protracted cellaring to allow the whipcord-tight structure to relax its grip. *Gold*

Here too there is a top note of pomegranate to the even spicier nose of violet, plum liqueur and soft floral influences. The charming, round and plump medium-bodied flavors possess a bit better depth and excellent persistence on the mildly warm mineral-driven finish. This is really quite impressive and built to reward 12 to 15 years of cellaring.

Still youthful crimson, with a lighter rim. There’s a bundle of energy on the nose, with a clear precise yet outgoing fruit. Pleasingly full on the palate with no sense of exaggeration, and a very long finish for this vintage. A lovely wine now showing at full potential.

Here is another great wine from Anne Gros, which will reward those with the patience and nouse to cellar for an extended period. The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is backward and reticent on the nose, but it only takes a few swirls of the glass and it reveals gorgeous black cherry and raspberry fruit mixed with a hint of dark chocolate from some residual new oak that will be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity. There is a smorgasbord of lush raspberry and wild strawberry fruit cloaked in new oak, but the wood does not obscure the grape variety or vineyard, allowing the character of the wine to be expressed with hints of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. What a great Richebourg, but one that I would actually afford another five years in the cellar. This is long-term. (NM)
