Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon
2016 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2016 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon (100VN, 98IWR, 97JD, 96RP, 96W&S, 96WS, 95DC, 95JS). Vinous: "The 2016 Monte Bello is a masterful expression of this lauded site in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It’s powerful, broad and infinitely layered, but it also possesses an incredibly finessed tannin structure that speaks clearly and forcefully but yields dutifully. Saturated blueberry, gravel, eucalyptus, charcoal, cedar and India ink build gradually and steadily through the long and sizzling finish. Just beginning to soften and develop beyond the primary stage, it wouldn’t be a crime to open a bottle now, but this has many, many lives left to live and should be even better (if you can fathom) in a few more years. This is what Monte Bello is all about. (BN)" (09/2024)

Of the 2016 Albino Rocca "Ronchi" Barbaresco, Wine Enthusiast writes: "Forest floor, new leather, underbrush and eucalyptus aromas mingle with a whiff of peppercorn. On the full-bodied, focused palate, tightly knit, noble tannins and bright acidity frame juicy Morello cherry, licorice, tobacco and a hint of truffle. Drink 2026-2036. Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet"
1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet"

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Etienne Sauzet Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru "Champs Canet" (93RP, 92ST, 90BH). Wine Advocate: "The Puligny-Montrachet Les Champs-Canet possesses an intense, deeply rich, broad, and white peach-scented nose. Its displays a lace-like, elegant, and highly-defined, yet expansive and powerful medium-to-full-bodied character. Leesy notes, together with minerals, pears, and sweet oak are found in this exciting and seductive wine. I suggest drinking it between 2002 and 2007. This wine had been bottled one week prior to my visit, having spent 14 months on its lees. (PR)" (02/1998)

Bid on this magnum of 2003 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L) (94WS). Wine Spectator: "Very smoky in aroma, with a spicy note accenting the core flavors of wild cherry and kirsch. Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru
1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (95ST, 93RP, 91BH). Int'l Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. Knockout grand cru aromas of macerated berries, licorice, jasmine, animal fur, tar and exotic baking spices; a great example of Bonnes-Mares, showing both the floral and animal aspects of the cru. Fills the mouth with sappy sucrosity, lifted by a strong floral element. A wine of great energy, finishing with firm but sweet tannins. Makes a strong argument that great grand cru Burgundy can be made at a yield of 42 hectoliters per hectare. (ST)" (03/2002)

Amazing concentration, brimming with focused cherry, plum, smoke and cinnamon flavors, all tied together into a harmonious package that keeps echoing and changing with every sip. Beautifully smooth but firm on the palate, it has the uncanny feeling of power with no weight, only mass. *Top 100 Wines of 1988* (HS)" (02/1988)

Guigal Côte-Rôtie , Wine Advocate writes: "Guigal's 1985 is a beautiful dark ruby/purple-colored wine with a classic Cote Rotie nose of smoky bacon fat, black raspberries, pepper, and spices. In the mouth, it is opulent and rich, but still somewhat unevolved, displaying moderate tannins in its long, fleshy, rich finish." (04/1992)

Of the 1996 Verget Chablis Grand Cru "Bougros" , Wine Advocate writes: " Guffens' Chablis offerings continue to enthrall me. Guffens most stunning Chablis in 1996 is the Chablis Bougros, a testimony to the greatness of the vintage and to his brilliant winemaking. It exhibits sublime lemon, mineral, flower, and wet stone aromatics as well as a feminine, silky, refined, classy, and medium-to-full-bodied personality. Raspberries, currants, roses, flint, and flavors reminiscent of a massive bouquet of freshly cut spring flowers are found in this complex and detailed beauty. Guffens put it best, 'I decided to throw away the Chardonnay and keep the flowers.' I suggest cellaring this gem until 2003 at the earliest, and drinking it over the subsequent 12 years. Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru
1984 Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1984 Henri Jayer Echezeaux Grand Cru. According to Jasper Morris, MW: "Henri Jayer's personal philosophy begun with the observation that 'wine must not be brought up in cotton-wool' and 'let nature go'. He was adamant that one cannot replace artificially elements in a wine which are absent at the start. Tinkering with musts and wine to adjust the results for inadequate fruit is not the way to achieve quality. Jayer channeled his energy and expertise in producing top-class grapes to vinify from vines that are more than 50 years old. Jayer's vinification methods were not particularly unusual but they reminded us that 'wine is for pleasure so one seeks as perfect an equilibrium as possible.'"

Of the 1996 Frédéric Magnien Morey-St-Denis "Les Herbuottes", Antonio Galloni writes writes: "Frederic Magnien bottles two lines; the Domaine Michel Magnien range is made predominantly from estate-owned grapes, although a few wines include purchased fruit as well. Magnien also issues a negociant label, Maison Frederic Magnien, exclusively from purchased grapes. If that sounds confusing, welcome to Burgundy! In layman’s terms the Domaine bottlings carry a black label, the Maison wines carry a white label...In general the Maison wines tend to emphasize a more red expression of fruit, while the Domaine wines are more towards the blue/black end of the spectrum."

Bid on this bottle of 1989 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Montrachet Grand Cru (99RP, 98WS, 95JG, 95VN). Wine Advocate: "Not surprisingly, this is another awesome example from the Domaine de la Romanee-Conti. If pure, honeyed thickness and glycerin are what you are looking for, there is not a more concentrated Chardonnay produced in the world. The only thing I have ever seen from the new world that approaches a wine such as this in nectar-like richness were the 1978 and 1980 Chalone, but that winery has now resorted to making much lighter, more commercially-oriented products. There is nothing commercial about this 1989 Montrachet. ...here is a bottle that will offer an awesome nose of honeyed, buttery, apple fruit, intertwined with aromas of smoked nuts and toasty new oak. In the mouth, it is almost greasy because of its extraordinary viscosity, thickness, and richness... (RP)" (02/1992)

Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains"
1980 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains"

Bid on this bottle of 1980 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits-St-Georges "Les Vaucrains" (94JG). John Gilman: "... The bouquet is deep and profound, offering up a glorious mélange of red cherries, plums, cardamom, cloves, woodsmoke, mustard seed, earth and just a whisper of spicy wood. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and tangy, with lovely focus, no rough edges (it certainly does take a few years with top Nuits St. Georges to get to this point), and a very long, balanced, meltingly-tannic and brilliant finish. The 1980 Vaucrains seems just a bit more complete and velvety than the 1980 Cailles, at least at this stage. It would be fascinating to revisit both these wines again ten years down the road. In any event, the 1980 Vaucrains is just a superb bottle of wine, and given how well it is showing at age twenty-five, it is hard not to think that all top vintages of Chevillon’s “big three” need at least this much time to fully reach their apogees." Bid on this bottle of 1990 Domaine Emmanuel Rouget Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru "Cros Parantoux" (97VN, 95RP, 94BH). Vinous: "One taste of Emmanuel Rouget’s 1990 Vosne-Romanée Cros Parantoux is all it takes to completely stop the conversation at the table. How can a wine be so beautiful? Ethereal and weightless on the palate, yet with considerable depth, the 1990 captures the essence of what makes Pinot Noir and Burgundy so compelling. Sweet floral notes wrap around an eternal, silky finish that is pure finesse. It’s hard to see the 1990 improving much from here although it will certainly hold for some time. Still, my preference would be to drink it sooner rather than later. (AG)" (04/2015)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru (96RP, 94WS, 93BH). Wine Advocate: "The Richebourg was an explosive wine with an earthy, cinnamon, gingery, soy sauce aroma backed up with the intense smell of plums and toasty new oak. Extremely rich, full bodied, and awesomely proportioned, this heroic wine should be drunk from the late nineties through the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It seems bigger, fuller, and more powerful than even the celestial 1985. The prices for the wines of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti may be exorbitant but the quality of the wines produced in the eighties is truly remarkable. (RP)" (12/1989)

Of the 2017 Donnhoff Oberhäuser Brücke Riesling Auslese #17 Goldkapsel Nahe (375ml), James Suckling writes: "Hold on to your hat! This is so concentrated and so filigree. Somewhere in this tightly coiled maelstrom of flavors is a bunch of sweetness. Yet, every time you think you've got it, it slips away. Breathtakingly long and fresh finish. From organically grown grapes. Fair'n Green certification. Drink or hold. Very limited production. " (09/2018)

Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru
1985 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (96RP). Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1985 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was a brilliant mature Burgundy at its peak. It has a fragrant and disarmingly pure bouquet with red plum, orange rind, minerals and rose petal aromas that almost "swarm" towards you. The palate is very well structured with black rather than red fruit infused with subtle marmalade and sour cherry notes. It is blessed with palpable mineralité, the terroir coming through uninhibited. What a fabulous mature Clos Vougeot from the late Philippe Engel, about as good as this medieval grand cru gets. À point. (NM)" (01/2017)

Trotanoy, Pomerol (375ml)
1975 Trotanoy, Pomerol (375ml)

Bid on this 2-half-bottle lot of 1975 Trotanoy, Pomerol (375ml) (97RP, 96ST, 96VN, 94JG). Wine Advocate: The 1975 Trotanoy can be an extraordinary wine on the right day. This was the right day. Served blind from a magnum, unaware of its age, I was struck by the depth of its color. The bouquet is almost ineffably complex, a mixture of red and black fruit, black truffle (indicating its Pomerol origins), sage and dried rose petals. It was the delineation and sheer confidence of the aromatics that leaves you spellbound. The palate is beautifully structured, very Left Bank in style thanks to its tertiary nature, yet bridled with disarming tension and energy from start to finish. There is a twist of sour cherry right on the aftertaste, completing a stunning Trotanoy. I very much doubt I will ever encounter an example of this outstanding Pomerol as good as this again. Dana Estates "Lotus Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (OWC)
2009 Dana Estates "Lotus Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (OWC)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2009 Dana Estates "Lotus Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (OWC - 97RP, 95ST, 93WS) in original wood. Wine Advocate: "A rich, sensual wine, the 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon Lotus Vineyard captures the best qualities of the vintage. Layers of dark red fruit, kirsch, sweet spices, tobacco and herbs saturate the palate as this large-scaled, voluptuous wine opens up in the glass. There is a purity and centeredness to the 2009 that is striking. At the same time, the tannins aren’t quite as polished as they are in the very best wines here. Overall, though, that is a pretty small critique for a wine that delivers so much pure pleasure. Exotic spice and kirsch notes reappear on the finish. The 2009 was fermented in a combination of 45% oak uprights, 45% cement and 10% barriques. It spent 26 months in 100% new French oak barrels. (AG)" (12/2012)

Emmanuel Rouget Échézeaux Grand Cru
1996 Emmanuel Rouget Échézeaux Grand Cru

Bid on this bottle of 1996 Emmanuel Rouget Échézeaux Grand Cru ((92-94RP), 92BH). Wine Advocate: "This bright, dark ruby-colored wine is superb. Rose, violet, lily, perfume, cherry, blackberry, and earth aromas lead to a full-bodied, velvety-textured, and immensely refined wine. This feminine, yet powerful beauty is magnificently proportioned, balanced, and reveals creamy blackberries, candied cherries, and hints of chocolate in its complex, concentrated and pure personality. Its immensely long finish reveals a firm backbone. (PR)" (08/1998)

I love the rosewater, currants and citrus character to this now. It's still full body yet so ethereal. It goes on and on in the finish turning creamy and citrusy." (10/2016)

Of the 2015 Hanzell "Estate" Sonoma Valley Chardonnay, Jeb Dunnuck writes: "Showing beautifully, the 2015 Chardonnay offers a touch of maturity in its caramelized peach, pineapple, flora, and toasted bread-like aromas and flavors. Medium-bodied and beautifully textured on the palate, it has plenty of fruit, a solid spine of acidity, and a clean, mineral-laced finish. This is just a beautiful Chardonnay from Sonoma that's drinking at point today yet will evolve nicely for another 5-7 years." (12/2020)

Of the 1987 Robert Mondavi "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Wine Advocate writes: "This has a wonderful lifted minty nose that actually reminds me of a great Mouton-Rothschild. Sublime definition and purity with scents of blackberry, black plum and just a touch of prune. Very intense and beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied, very svelte and supple, beautiful balance and poise, notes of blackberry, cedar, black plum and just a touch of iodine. Elegant finish. Superb. (NM)" (11/2009)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2018 Bevan "Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard" St. Helena Cabernet Sauvignon (100IWR, 100JD, 100RP, 96VN). Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard was aged for 19 months in French oak barrels, 100% new. Deep garnet-purple colored, it sashays out of the glass with flamboyant scents of redcurrant jelly, Black Forest cake, blackcurrant pastilles and rose oil with suggestions of cast-iron pan, pencil lead and tilled soil plus a waft of fragrant earth. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated with firm, exquisitely ripe, fine-grained tannins and seamless freshness, it delivers an incredible mineral and perfumed red fruit firework display finish. Fans of Dr. Crane are going to LOVE this expression, masterfully crafted by Russell Bevan—an absolute must-try! (LPB) " (02/2021)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1977 Fonseca Vintage Port (100JS, 100WS, 95JG). James Suckling: "I found a bottle of 1977 Fonseca in my cellar - probably my last. It was absolutely gorgeous. I gave this fortified wine a perfect score in its youth and I think it has finally evolved into its perfection as a mature vintage Port... This is in total balance now with such harmony. What amazing aromas of berry and flowers. Full and sweet, the tannins are complete dissolved. The fruit is perfect. This goes on for minutes. " (06/2016)

Vice Versa "Mysterons" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
2021 Vice Versa "Mysterons" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Bid on this bottle of 2021 Vice Versa "Mysterons" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98JD, 96RP, 95DC). Jeb Dunnuck: "Coming just about all from the Ecotone Vineyard (there's a splash of Georges III in here), the 100% Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon Mysterons is deep purple-hued, with an insanely good bouquet of red and black fruits, iron, bloody meat, and graphite, and it turns slightly more floral and violet-tinged with air. Classic, quintessential 2021 Napa Valley magic, it's full-bodied and has tons of obvious minerality, a stacked mid-palate, and enough tannins to warrant 5-7 years of bottle age. It will most likely merit a perfect rating at maturity. (JD) 98+" (02/2024)
