Bushmills distillery stands in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in the village that shares its name. Its 26 Year Old single malt highlights a long maturation: the age statement guarantees that even the youngest whiskey in the bottle has spent at least 26 years aging in wood.
This is mastery of American oak! Polished wood, cinnamon cereals, dry spices of pepper, allspice, and paprika, and a riot of mostly overripe fruit: custard apple, mango, brown banana, baked apricot dessert, and fresh fig. Caramel, date slices, treacle, and cracker bread flavors are bathed in feisty pot still spices and fleeting green apple, before a lush, rich sweetness of banoffee pie, vanilla, and cinnamon descends. The finish is seemingly eternal. (JM, Winter 2018)
Aged in former bourbon, sherry and Malaga casks, look for a deep orange-gold hue and inviting baked-pear aroma. The robust, spiced palate offers brown sugar, honey, golden raisins and vanilla-tinged baked pear. (KN)
The bold, fruit aroma suggests fresh-cut apples and honeysuckle, while the silky palate offers deep, bold flavor. Look for dark honey and clove, edging into tea, oak and cocoa midpalate. Apple freshness brightens the dry finish. An ice cube is the only adornment needed for this well-structured, tasty sipper. *Best Spirits of 2017* (KN)
Toffee up front, with vanilla, green apple, pot still spice, milk chocolate, peppercorn, ground ginger, and aromatic hints of coffee. To taste, a bounty of toffee, chocolate, espresso, tobacco, vanilla pod, and burnt sugar notes, with coriander seed and fennel spices, then burnt orange and more coffee before a delicious creaminess spills over. The integration of chocolate and coffee notes really elevates this vintage as a particularly fine whiskey. (JM, Summer-2023)
A heart of pot still spices, but this has oodles of complexity and depth with concentrated autumnal flavors of apple and blackberry cooked with brown sugar, then morello cherry, hazelnut, allspice, aged tobacco leaf, and worn leather. Mellow dark-toffee sweetness and cooked fruits carry the cinnamon and peppercorn, oak, and leather into a tongue-pounding finish. A slap in the chops—just what you want from a pot still whiskey. (JM, Spring 2019)
An easy-drinking cask-strength whiskey, the nose has an equal balance between fruit and spice, as red apple and bright cherry meet Chinese five spice, savory undertones, and salted nuts. This has big, chewy sherry notes; it’s quite nutty, and the spice starts building early on. Hold out till the end for black cherry, toffee, and burnt fruitcake, with a finish of autumnal fruits, menthol, and aniseed. (JM, Summer 2020)
Very elegant, complex, and stylish. Honeyed and silky in texture, with toffee, toasted marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, banana bread, and a hint of toasted coconut. Bright fruit and golden raisin blend in nicely with the layers of sweetness. Impeccable balance and very approachable. Classic Irish whiskey! *Value Pick* (JH, Winter-2010)
This is classic Redbreast, plussed up with an elegant sweetness and a touch of herbaceousness. The nose opens with dry vanilla, orange spice, and a wisp of clove underneath baked, honeyed pastry. That pastry note turns right into honeycomb on the palate, bringing out lovely orchard and stone fruits, toffee, and cedar. A light touch of thyme and sage settles on the finish, all while that signature oily Redbreast texture lingers for minutes on end. This is a beautiful new expression that lets the whiskey guide the cask, avoiding the heavy-handedness often found in other sweet wine finishes.
There was a time when there were only two distilleries in Ireland; they were, for a while, owned by the same company. Then this small distillery opens up, staunchly independent, and starts doing things unheard of in Ireland. Instead of making traditional Irish whiskey (triple-distilled, non-smoky, and with a pot still whiskey component), they started making very scotch-like whiskey (double distilled, single malt, and sometimes very smoky). Nearly twenty years later, they’re still making Irish whiskey, and they’re still doing it their way. Made by Cooly Distillery, Winner of the 2010 Malt Advocate Distillery of the Year (beating out all the Scottish and American ones!!)
McConnell's was born in 1776 and went dark in the early 1900s following a distillery fire and the advent of Prohibition. In 2020, the brand was resurrected. What's in the bottle is a five-year-old blended whiskey, showing honey and coconut aromas. The palate offers golden raisin, red apple and vanilla, leading into a clove and pepper finish punctuated by a final cigar smoke exhale. Yes, the label says “whisky” without the “e,” defying Irish whiskey convention. (KN)
Wow! Could this be the greatest comeback since Rocky climbed back in the ring and showed the young upstarts who was the boss? It's taken Irish Distillers a long time to respond to the pounding it's taken from Cooley but it's back in the ring with two wonderful pot still whiskeys. This is the better of the two, a whopping oily, woody package of classic pot still Irishness. The green fruits tumble over tannin and spice like frisky puppies. (Vol. 20, #3)

Insider's Advantage
Redbreast 12 year old is a classic pure pot still Irish whiskey; where can you go from there? This new 15 year old expression is more muscular (bottling at 46% and not chill filtering certainly helps), but there are trade-offs. It’s a bit closed on the nose (like a great Bordeaux wine that’s too young). I do enjoy the silky/oily texture, the bold resinous oak spice grip on the finish, and the rich nutty toffee, fig, black raspberry, chocolaty, chewy nougat throughout the palate. (JH, Winter 2010)
Spot whiskeys inhabit a flavor profile between Redbreast's fruitiness and Powers' muscularity, and this feisty newcomer completes the family with its nose of baked apple, spiced nuts, toffee, very crisp spices, and cool mint. The creamy palate of melted toffee and condensed milk layers on tangy citrus, bitter peels, baked lemon, apple, dried cherry, and walnut, with peppery pot still spices running amok at full strength. (JM, Spring-2021)
Ground cinnamon, coriander seed, nutmeg, mustard seed, spiced meat, and the saltiness of sand-encrusted seashells combine with a powerful honey note, fresh pear, golden sultana, and Cox’s apple. Quaker Oats, golden syrup, and chocolate-covered graham crackers with cherries set the scene, though spices quickly engulf them. Perfect harmony is reestablished as it fattens out with cinnamon toffee. Bold, robust, and triumphant: just add a Dublin pub weekend crowd and you’re all set. (JM, Fall 2019)
J.J. Corry was founded by Louise McGuane on her family farm in County Clare, reviving Ireland’s historic whiskey-bonding tradition. Named for a local nineteenth-century bonder, the house matures and blends sourced Irish whiskeys; The Gael brings malt and grain whiskey together in a distinctly Irish blend.
The former Bourbon barrels used to mature this whiskey were “charred and double charred,” the producer says, to coax more from the barrel wood. Look for an almost piña colada-like effect: coconut and tropical fruit aromas, and a rich, honey-soaked palate that shows caramelized pineapple and dried apricot. (KN)
Light gold, with a fruity aroma underpinned by a tickle of oak. Most of the flavor is on the lingering finish, which shows pear touched with cinnamon.

Tullamore D.E.W. traces its roots to a distillery founded in the Irish town of Tullamore in 1829. The name incorporates the initials of Daniel E. Williams, whose leadership helped develop the whiskey business in the late 19th century. This Irish whiskey is a blend of grain, malt, and pot still whiskeys.
Founded in Dublin in 1780, Jameson now distills its whiskey at Midleton Distillery in County Cork. Triple Triple builds on the house’s signature triple-distillation approach, combining grain and pot still Irish whiskeys matured across three cask types in a distinctive blended expression.
Teeling opened its Dublin distillery in 2015, the city’s first new whiskey distillery in more than 125 years. This Wonders of Wood release is a single pot still Irish whiskey, a traditional style distilled from a mash combining malted and unmalted barley, presented as part of Teeling’s wood-focused series.

Meet the undisputed driver of the Irish whiskey resurgence. The nose is light, with baked apple strudel, toasty staves, and hints of the bourbon and sherry cask influence. There are discernible pot still elements contributing a fruity character and plenty of weight. This dominant triple distilled whiskey is smooth, sure, although that characteristic improves noticeably up the range. Expect Braeburn apples, raspberry, strawberry, currants, and mixed peel, with a short finish of cinnamon spice and a dull fruit note. (JM, Fall 2015)
Named for longtime Midleton Master Distiller Barry Crockett, this single pot still Irish whiskey honors a career that helped preserve and advance Ireland’s distinctive pot still tradition. Introduced in 2011, it is made at Midleton Distillery in County Cork and matured in American oak, including ex-bourbon barrels and new oak casks.

Molly Malone Small Batch Irish Whiskey is a lovely expression that feels rooted in heritage yet crafted for today’s drinker. Inspired by the legendary song of Dublin and born from a family with deep wine and spirits roots dating back to the 18th century, this whiskey is hand-crafted in small batches with a clear focus on balance and approachability. The spirit marries the finest Irish single malts and premium grains, distilled according to time-honored Irish tradition and matured in carefully selected second fill American oak bourbon casks that have already given up much of their aggressive wood influence, allowing the whiskey’s natural sweetness and light character to shine through. Mollys texture is smooth and inviting; the palate is light yet engaging, with gentle citrus lift, vanilla sweetness, and soft oak warmth that makes it versatile neat or in classic cocktails. What sets this release apart is not age statement or high proof but its thoughtful assembly, its narrative that connects Dublin’s cultural heart with convivial moments, and the rarity inherent in its small batch production and curated cask selection. For those seeking an Irish whiskey with story, character, and drinkability, this is a compelling pour that pays homage to tradition while remaining refreshingly expressive in the glass.
The Teeling Family has been in whiskey for centuries. In 1782, Walter Teeling opened the family's first distillery in Dublin and over two hundred years later John Teeling opened the Cooley Distillery in County Louth. After selling his beloved distillery to spirits giant Beam Inc., Mr. Teeling wasted no time before jumping back on the whiskey train. This time at the helm is Jack Teeling, John's son. The result is this lovely, innovative new whiskey. Clearly, the Teelings' have access like no one else and thank god because he's now cranking out this wonderful little glory. This is a high malt blend, which is further matured in various casks and released in ultra small batches. This batch was finished for 6 months barrels that formerly held high quality rum. The rum casks provide a wonderful flourish to the soft smooth qualities of the Irish whiskey. On the nose, powerful baking spices are evident (maybe the rum barrels?) hidden behind are fresher more classically Irish whiskey aromas, apples, stone fruits, fresh herbs and vanilla. Texturally full, with plenty of spice and depth of character on the palate. It's not sweet Irish whiskey, it's lovely luscious round and spicy. Its bottled without chill-filtration at 92 proof.
