I've always been a bit of a Scapa fan boy. I used to think it was cool to drink the "other Orkney" distillery. But then it just kind of disappeared and the owners seemed to basically forget how special it was. Now they're back and absolutely killing it. It's COOL to drink Scapa again. So many unique stuff about this distillery from the super long ferments to the absolutely weirdo Lomond pot still, creates an absolutely stunning spirit particularly with significant age on it. Let's have a go. A dense looking burnished color (1.1). Those is bursting with rich tropical fruit -mango, passion fruit, kiwi- sweet toasted vanilla and ripe orchard fruit. With a bit of water an incredible opening occurs further deepening the dense fruit. The palate is surprisingly lifted and has a lovely bite to balance the sweet malt and fruit. This one needs time and air, maybe a tiny drop of water but not more. It's really incredible how delicious and opulent this feels and the price seems absolutely antique just like the whisky. It's also presented in a gorgeous box and is not chillfiltered which is a huge plus considering this isn't from an independent owner. I'm very into these whiskies.

Highland Park’s Between You & I by Laila Gohar takes a wonderfully personal approach to whisky making. This limited 17-year-old single malt brings together Master Whisky Maker Marc Watson and Egyptian-raised, New York-based artist Laila Gohar, whose extraordinary edible installations transform familiar ingredients into surreal works of art. For this collaboration, Watson sampled more than 80 casks before selecting a combination intended to evoke Gohar’s Egyptian heritage. New American oak casks lead the composition, offering an intriguing direction for this beloved Orkney distillery. Bottled at 47.5% ABV, the whisky explores the connection between flavor and memory, with Gohar’s first taste transporting her back to Cairo. Her personal associations also inspired the illustrations accompanying the release, extending the collaboration from the glass to the artwork. It’s a fascinating creative brief for a whisky maker, and one that gives Highland Park enthusiasts something substantial to explore: seventeen years of maturation, an unusual emphasis on new American oak, and a cask selection built around one person’s memories. A rare single cask of Highland Park over 30 years of age. Mr. Murray rates this at the top of the pile at 96.5 points. He says, "Nose: Pretty near perfect HP for its age, and one of the best examples of the distillery of that era I have nosed for a very long time. Slightly above average peat for a HP, which works perfectly in its favour. The usual heather honey has been skewed slightly by the heady mix of tannins and peat. The saltiness is profound, the oak a rich, spicy backbone. The sweetness is subtle and still honeyed, but more now a blend of Manuka and orange blossom. Truly magnificent! Taste: Scotland's silkiest malt at its most silky. The bold smoke on arrival is caught in the velvet gloves of the lightly oiled barley sugar, a dark liquorice sweetness spreading as the oak makes its mark. The spices are prim, proper and just so, never moving out of their set orbit while the honey starts to make its long-awaited mark, bringing with it the light smoke; a quick surge of exotic fruit underlines the antiquity with aplomb. Finish: Long, increasingly smoky with the spices still teasing and forging a beautiful duet with the molassed sugars... Balance: This is a malt whisky coming to the end of its life, like a star becomes a white dwarf In density is huge and I mean gigantic. Scapa has long been one of those secrets of Scotland that only the very into it Scotch people had heard of. They had an extremely delicious and affordable 14 year old for many years before going NAS only for the longest time. Now they're seemingly back with one of the most incredible deals in the Scotch world. To be perfectly honest I'm still not 100% sure that someone hasn't messed up the prices on these, but for now we're forging ahead. This Scapa in other markets seems to be twice the price, but I've asked the supplier many times if the product is priced correctly and they've confirmed that we haven't been bamboozled. To have a high quality 16 year old malt from an old rare distillery like this hit the market at $60 is truly astonishing in the current environment. The only more shocking question is how the old 21 year is only $100 more. They're neighbors down the road are asking nearly double for their 21. Of course the low price doesn't matter if it doesn't taste good, so let's do it! Bottled at a lovely 96 proof the color is deep copper (1.0). The nose is gorgeous and very full offering salted dried plum, peach skin, almond skins, old furniture, hints of salt and limestone. The palate is gorgeous with lots of fruit up front and a big rich oak spice and deep dark roasted malt moving toward the middle. This is meant to be all ex-American oak, but there's an opulence that makes me think sherry influence here, although it's extremely well integrated. On the finish the ocean-y Orkney character kicks up although there's no discernable smoke/peat to my palate. This is just very very good whisky in a lovely bottle at a ridiculous price. I'm still waiting for the call to tell me they've wildly mispriced this, but for now we're forging ahead. Please don't be left behind.

A rich, gentle, and well‑balanced scotch. The inviting smokiness is complemented by a touch of sweetness of dried fruit, gained through maturation in sherry casks. It's aromatic and coats the mouth with a peated, honeyed, tingly sensation. I have found the right scotch that makes me excited to begin my journey of understanding and appreciating the islands style.

The good news: This is one of the best Highland Park whiskies I have ever tasted. The bad news: it’s the new release for Travel Retail (formerly Duty Free). It’s lush, well-balanced, and very complex. Well-defined notes of toffee, candied fruit, and roasted nuts are accentuated by background honey, chocolate mousse, and smoke. Here’s the icing on the cake: it’s bottled at 47.5%, which really allows the flavors to shine. If you’re going overseas, consider tracking down a bottle. (JH, Summer 2008)

As with most independent releases, it is sold without the Highland Park name, though its source is a famously poorly kept secret. Distilled on July 21, 2006, it aged in a refill cask until 2018 before being re-racked into a first-fill oloroso sherry hogshead. It was bottled on September 22, 2022, at a cask strength of 59.3% ABV, without chill filtration or added color, with just 287 bottles produced. Beautifully amber, the sherry cask frames rather than masks the spirit, highlighting Highland Park’s signature delicate honey, heather and gentle smoke alongside dried fruit, orange peel and warm spice. A rare, collectible single cask for Highland Park and sherried Scotch enthusiasts.

More than half a century in the making, Highland Park 56 Year Old offers an extraordinary connection to the distillery's 1968 spirit, with just 170 bottles released worldwide. Its story took a decisive turn in February 2008, when whisky from four refill butts and six refill hogsheads was married and transferred into first-fill sherry casks. That parcel would yield some of Highland Park's most remarkable releases, including the famous 54 Year Old. For the 56, the distillery drew from a previously unreleased first-fill, sherry-seasoned American oak puncheon, completing sixteen years of secondary maturation after roughly four decades in refill wood. The sheer patience behind this whisky is remarkable, but the precise cask history makes it all the more fascinating: two distinct chapters of maturation spanning generations at the Orkney distillery. Bottled at 47.1% ABV with natural color and without chill filtration, this is an exceptionally rare opportunity to experience Highland Park at such an advanced age. Designers John Galvin and Michael Rudak created the accompanying decanter and Scottish oak case, drawing inspiration from Orkney's Standing Stones of Stenness. Each case takes seventy hours to complete, with hand-carved textures echoing the ancient stones and surrounding water. A remarkable piece of Highland Park history, down to the last detail.
