If you weren’t aware, I’m a total sucker for Caol Ila. It’s a very large distillery, but only a fraction of its output reaches the market as single malt. I’ve even heard rumors that significant quantities of unpeated malt are produced for blending needs. One thing I love about Caol Ila, much like some of its Islay neighbors, is how remarkably multifaceted it can be. It’s difficult to determine whether these stylistic ranges are intentional, as with Bruichladdich, or seasonal, as with Laphroaig, but this year we have three barrels of different styles and ages, each from classic refill hogsheads. The idea was to capture three faces of Caol Ila and present them at stupendous prices. This first cask is the youngest of the three, but also the most vibrant. The color is a juicy pale gold (0.3). The nose is shiveringly good, offering zesty citrus and salt, briny oiliness, salted capers, tense sea spray, and fresh green peat. With air, it moves further into a pure, taut vibrancy. The palate is intense, with a strong citrus character of lime and salt, followed by more brine and a long, peaty finish. An absolute laser beam for serious lovers of the high-intensity style but it also has plenty of sweet barrel and a deep rich texture to keep it balanced. Signatory is not officially offering top tier malt year after year at prices that outperform the market by larger margins.
The Gordon & MacPhail Discovery range examines the core flavours at the heart of Scotch single malt whisky, and this is the headline of the Smoky side of things. A 13-year-old Caol Ila from the island of Islay, this is as typical a dram as you can get from the island, packed with sweet fruit and dark peat smoke.

The idea was to capture three faces of Caol Ila and present them at stupendous prices. This second barrel from Old Particular is starting to offer a wilder side of the wonderful north shore distiller. The color is a bright yellow gold (0.4). The nose is powerful with green pepper, lime zesty, dense green peat and tense ashy smoke. There's some lovely soft oak to mellow a bit to already and hints of smoked meats. Dense dark ash smoke envelopes the palate and doesn't relent. Smoking embers, mesquite, dark roast wood, and a tense salty finish. A totally wonderful and unexpected side of this fabulous distillery.
A seductive brininess and waves of oily peat-reek greet the olfactory sense. The palate entry finds a surprisingly buttery-creamy leaning along with the peat-reek; at midpalate the flavor becomes concentrated, oily, malty sweet, and only moderately peaty. Ends on a sweet malty note. Builds from stage to stage, each phase being better than the last. *Best Buy* (PP)

Bid on this bottle of 2008 Caol Ila 13 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Refill Sherry Butt Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. This refill sherry butt is no exception and while we talk about this as being "young, " these stocks that we've been buying for several years, really aren't so young anymore. We had a stupendous 11 Year Old version last year, which sold out on pre-arrival and we couldn't believe they had another slightly older cask aged in refill sherry a nearly the same price. This isn't the dark overpowering sherry that some would like, but it does add nuance and depth to the already extremely delicious Caol Ila malt. There aren't a lot of affordable cask strength single barrel Islay's in the world these days, so we're really happy this butt turned out nearly 400 bottles. Nevertheless, they'll be gone way too quickly.

Bid on this bottle of 2012 Caol Ila "The Firkin Whisky Co" Marsala Single Cask Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky. An odd but outright delicious whisky. Fuse the peaty smokiness of a classic Caol Ila distilled in 2012 with the sweetness of Marsala seasoned hand-built custom cask which uses a combination of American first-fill Bourbon & new French Limousin oak staves with a custom char. It's a wild one, but you can't go wrong with Caol Ila as the distillate so you know it's good.

Bid on this 1-700 ml bottle lot of Caol Ila 10 Year Old Hart Brothers Single Hogshead Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (700ml). This perfect cask of Caol Ila from the excellent Glasgow blender and bottler Hart Brothers is the first Islay cask that they've yet to furnish K&L exclusively. Filled into a high-quality hogshead, this famously ocean-y peater is in full form here. Full bodied and intense, the weighty mouth feel is contrasted by the tangy seaside character. We rarely come across young Caol Ila that's not excellent, but occasionally we are happy to encounter some that are truly superlative. This is obviously in the latter category.

******SPECIAL ORDER SUBJECT TO AVAILABILITY - NEW YORK ARRIVAL IN 5-7 BUSINESS DAYS. NO REFUNDS OR RETURNS******* Just 99 bottles were drawn from this extraordinary 1984 Caol Ila, matured for 40 years in refill hogshead #8484006286 and bottled in 2025 at a natural cask strength of 51.3% ABV. Situated near Port Askaig, the distillery takes its name from the Sound of Islay and underwent a comprehensive rebuilding between 1972 and 1974. Its imposing stillhouse houses three 20,000-liter wash stills and three 14,000-liter spirit stills, placing this vintage roughly a decade after the rebuilt distillery reopened. Selected for La Maison du Whisky's Artist #15 Something in the Water collection in collaboration with Elixir Distillers, this single cask represents the oldest whisky in that six-release exploration of Islay. The Artist series, established in 2011, pairs whiskies bottled at natural cask strength with the work of contemporary artists. North Indian artist Radhika Surana illustrates this edition through indigo-dyed textiles and meticulous embroidery inspired by imagined journeys across Islay's rugged terrain. Her work Meandering through relationships I accompanies a remarkably small surviving parcel of Caol Ila from the mid-1980s.
