A very concentrated and succulent dry riesling with a fabulous textural complexity on the medium- to full-bodied palate. A very wide spectrum of stone-fruit aromas is beautifully interwoven with the salty minerality at the expansive finish.

Somehow the ripeness of Mediterranean citrus fruit meets with an almost Alpine freshness in this concentrated and very focused dry riesling that races briskly across your palate. Medium-bodied but with a wonderfully light touch, this turns from power to delicacy at the very long finish.

Density, coolness, floral finesse and wet-stone magic intersect in this extraordinary wine that defies easy categorization. In spite of the enormous concentration, this is barely medium-bodied and, at the finish, it floats off into the almost infinite distance. Enormous aging potential.
Schloss Vollrads is one of Germany’s most historic and important wine estates, with a winemaking tradition dating back more than 800 years. Located in the Rheingau, the estate takes its name from the imposing castle at its center, whose origins date to the 13th century. Wine from Schloss Vollrads was being commercially documented as early as 1211, making it one of the oldest continuously operating wine estates in the world. The property has been closely associated with the noble Greiffenclau family for centuries, and its wines helped establish the Rheingau’s reputation as one of Germany’s premier regions for Riesling. Today, Schloss Vollrads remains a benchmark producer, particularly for its elegant, terroir-driven Rieslings, and its long history, distinctive estate vineyards, and commitment to quality make it an important reference point for understanding the heritage of German wine.
Sleek, cool and lively on the barely medium-bodied palate, this entry-level dry Rheingau riesling shows good juiciness (think yellow apples and lemons), the crisp acidity married to fresh mint aromas. Drink or hold. Screw cap.
This very youthful, racy dry riesling is still quite tightly wound, but don’t let that put you off. The fresh garden herb, yuzu and Amalfi lemon aromas are really expressive, and the wet-stone minerality creates terrific tension on the medium-bodied palate. Vegan. Drinkable now, but best from 2026. Screw cap.
Made in a classic off-dry from the Rheinhessen, with stunning aromatics of sweet pears in syrup, white wildflowers, alpine herbs and cardamom. On the palate juicy pineapples, green mangoes and sweet peaches meld with a smoky undertone of chipped flint. Delicious. (CP)
A stunning village wine! The complex nose of orange blossom, nectarine and talc gently pulls you into this impeccably balanced, medium-bodied dry riesling that glides over your palate. Then comes the very long, Amalfi-lemon and salty finish. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Leitz, based in Rüdesheim in Germany’s Rheingau, brings its Riesling expertise to the nonalcoholic Eins Zwei Zero range. This Riesling begins as wine before undergoing vacuum distillation to remove alcohol at low temperatures—a production step that distinguishes it from unfermented grape juice.
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2020 Schloss Johannisberg Grünlack Riesling Spätlese Rheingau (99JS, 93RP). James Suckling: "Very cool and reserved at the front, but this is an enormously deep and complex wine that has staggering mineral intensity. The lime and oolong-tea freshness effortlessly swallows up the unfermented grape sweetness, as if it didn’t really exist. Some will criticize, saying that this is too radical, but that’s what creates the great excitement! The herbal freshness at the finish is really astounding. " (07/2021)

The 2021 Riesling Martinsthaler Rödchen Auslese trocken is grown on deep, stony, loam-loess soils. It first hits the nose with a touch of lees, followed by bright, vivid lemon. The palate is also bright and lemony, all bedded on lees, with a hue of apricot alongside the lemony brightness and clarity. The zestiness on the palate leads to a very dry finish. (AK)
The 2024 Riesling Oestricher Lenchen Kabinett has a touch of woodruff on the nose before lemon kicks in. The palate is so beautifully light and bright. This has found its groove at around 45 g/L of residual sugar set against 8 g/L of acidity. (Medium)(AK)
I love the orange blossom aroma of this medium-bodied and beautifully balanced Kabinett that’s barely off-dry. Stacks of citrus and white peach fruit, but without being in the slightest bit loud. Fine tannins and a lively acidity complete the unique picture. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Glass stopper.
A great Rheingau Spatlese with terrific concentration, but also wonderful balance and a barely off-dry palate. Ripe apricot and mandarin orange aromas, but nothing is a jot too much. Fantastic intensity at the very long, complete finish where there’s a twist of licorice. Drink or hold. Glass stopper.

The Leitz EINS-ZWEI-ZERO Sparkling Rosé from acclaimed Rheingau producer Johannes Leitz is a refreshing, alcohol-free bubbly that delivers plenty of festive charm without the alcohol. Made from red wine grapes, including Pinot Noir, it is gently dealcoholized and carbonated to preserve its lively fruit character, offering enticing aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, rhubarb, and rosehip. Fine bubbles and bright acidity balance the natural sweetness, creating a juicy, almost-dry impression with a clean, refreshing finish.

Bid on this 6-bottle tasting lot; including 1-bottle of 2002 Karthäuserhof Eitelsbacher Karthäuserhofberg Riesling Spätlese, 2-bottles of 2004 Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese (95ST, 93WS, 90RP), 2-bottles of 2004 Schlossgut Diel Scheurebe Spätlese (90RP), and 1-bottle of 2009 Domaine Marcel Deiss Schoenenbourg Grand Cru (92RP). Of the 2004 Josef Leitz Rüdesheimer Berg Schlossberg Riesling Spätlese, Int'l Wine Cellar writes: "Pale golden yellow. Ethereal aromas of papaya, white chocolate and mint leaves waft over the botrytis elements. Impressively rich and creamy, with honey-glazed exotic fruit flavors and a sublime slate minerality. In spite of its sheer size this wine is exceptionally well balanced and stunningly long. A show-stopper, and my early candidate for the finest spatlese of the vintage." (02/2006)
