Kristian Keber "BRDA" Goriska Brda Slovenia (Orange/Natural Wine)
2022 Kristian Keber "BRDA" Goriska Brda Slovenia (Orange/Natural Wine)

Kristian Keber is one of the rising stars of Slovenia and the son of Edi Keber who is one of Collio's icons. This Slovenian property is just a stones throw from the Italian border. Kristian's white is a blend of 50% Ribolla Gialla, 40% Friulano and 10% Malvasia Istriana. The wine sees 12 days maceration on skins giving it that wonderfully taut but not overwhelming "orange" profile. It is fermented in cement vats using indigenous yeasts and then aged for 2 years in large oak casks with 6 months more bottle age before release. *Orange Wine* *Natural Wine*

Batic Cabernet Franc Vipava Valley Slovenia
2022 Batic Cabernet Franc Vipava Valley Slovenia

The signature methodology of the Batic estate is knowing when and how to do nothing. Highly selective hand harvesting, extended maceration (particularly native white grape varieties), fermenting in open topped Slovenian wooden vats without temperature control, and only using indigenous yeast are the major means to this end. While the rosé is made in stainless steal, all of the other wines see only Slovenian oak from primary through malolactic. All wines are bottled un-fined, often unfiltered, and in some cases bottled without additional sulfur (SO2). Lunar cycles and seasons are strictly observed and determine releases and bottling dates. If it’s too cloudy for example, wines will not be bottled because there is too much interference between the wine and the heavens. This one is a big wine that goes best with a big steak. It was made of 100% Cabernet Franc grapes fermented in its own yeast, fully organic and biodynamic wine, maceration of 15 days and aged 12 months in Slovenian oak barrels and another six months in the bottle. It offers a complex bouquet and aromas of fruit, bread crust, coffee and dark chocolate and a touch of spices. It's a full-bodied wine with velvety tannins and well-balanced acidity. *Biodynamic*

Kabaj "Sivi" Pinot Gris Goriska Brda Slovenia (Skin Contact/Natural Wine)
2020 Kabaj "Sivi" Pinot Gris Goriska Brda Slovenia (Skin Contact/Natural Wine)

Kabaj (Ka-bye) have farmed their vineyards for many generations. When Katja Kabaj met French oenologist Jean-Michel Morel after his stint at an Italian winery, they fell in love and eventually married. Jean-Michel brought some of those Italian and French sensibilities to the winery along with his fondness for working with amphorae. Those who have tasted Kabaj whites know that these wines range from light to full skin contact for the whites. And that the "Sivi" Pinot Gris is truly intriguing. It's aged for two weeks on the skins and then for about a year in neutral barrels before bottling. Since Pinot Gris is a naturally pink colored grape it has a light rose hue that adds to the already fascinating and inviting flavor profile. It is in the "orange" category of wines but is a easy entry point as the wine is not as intensely powerful as the Rebula or similarly styled skin-contact wines. *Natural Wine* *Orange Wine*

Domaine Ciringa "Fosilni Breg" Sauvignon Blanc
2023 Domaine Ciringa "Fosilni Breg" Sauvignon Blanc
92-93RP
92VN

Aged for 18 months in large oak casks and scheduled to be bottled in later April 2025, the still-cloudy sample 2023 Fosilni Breg Sauvignon Blanc comes from the Slovenian part of the Zieregg, where the vines were planted by Armin Tement in 2006 with own massal selections and different rootstocks adapted to the five different terroirs of the long rows climbing from around 300 up to almost 500 meters above altitude. The wine offers a clear, aromatic and generous but elegant and juicy bouquet of yellow fruits and flowers intermingled with saline and lemony notes. Round, refined and very elegant on the palate, thanks to the humous brown earth terroir, this is an irresistible, elegant, refined, savory and lemon-bitter Sauvignon Blanc with fine tannins and a long, lemon-flavored finish. This is a gorgeous wine with an open-hearted character. 12.5% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in April 2025.(SR)
