This long-aged bottle, from the best vintage of my career, is one of the most laughably great deals that I have been able to offer in 26 years as the champagne buyer here at K&L. The super long ageing (this is being released after Bollinger RD and Dom Pérignon P2 2008 after all!) has given this wine the fine brioche, the delicate beurre d’Issigny aromas and the pinpoint stream of fine bubbles that can’t be had any other way. The best vintage of the 21st century has given it concentration, length and a Puligny-Montrachet like lime character. This is a wine that will cellar well, and the long, detailed finish, loaded with freshness and chalk is something one does not expect even from a bottle at twice the price. Don’t wait to case up on this.

It is hard to call Petrus a “sleeper of the vintage,” but the 2008 will merit more attention than most consumers would think. Low yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare resulted in only 25,000 bottles of this beauty. A wine of great intensity (possibly the most concentrated wine of the vintage), this 100% Merlot boasts a dark purple color as well as a sweet perfume of mocha, caramel, black cherries, black currants, earth and forest floor. Deep, unctuously textured, full-bodied and pure, it will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring and should drink well for 25-30+ years. (RP)
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2008 Vilmart & Cie "Grand Cellier d'Or" Brut Champagne (94RP, 94VN). Vinous: "The 2008 Brut Cuvée Grand Cellier d'Or is bright, focused and very tightly wound. Crystalline and energetic to the core, the 2008 is going to require at least a few years to fully come together. The wine's vibrancy and pure, chiseled flavors suggest it will age gracefully for years. The 2008 is 80% Chardonnay and 20% Pinot Noir, both from Les Blanches Voies Bas in Rilly la Montagne, that spent 10 months in neutral oak. (AG) 94+" (11/2013)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Montée de Tonnerre" (96VN, 94BH, (93-94RP), 93JG). Vinous: "Bright yellow with a green tinge. Classic Montée de Tonnerre aromas of lemon ice, crushed rock, iodiney minerality and white flowers. floral, lemon ice, straight and classic. Tactile, juicy and utterly gripping--in fact still almost painful today. Powerful salty minerality and penetrating acidity currently dominate the wine's lemon oil, grapefruit and floral flavors, with the wine showing a weightless impression. The dusty mineral-driven finish stains the palate and builds inexorably... Drink the 2010 for lunch now but hold this magical wine for another couple years, as its spring is still tightly coiled. This was my favorite wine of the tasting. The 2014 and 2010 vintages may be richer and deeper, as Isabelle Raveneau suggested to me three years ago, but this '08 is utterly classic. (ST)" (08/2019)

The 2008 Cristal Late-Released is a special cuvée bottled to celebrate Cristal’s 150th Anniversary. It spent an added four years on the lees, which places it between the regular release and the Vinothèque in terms of aging. Explosive in the glass, the 2008 possesses off-the-charts textural richness and density, much of that coming from the shaking of the bottles during élevage (poignettage). That extra mid-palate resonance fills out the layers, resulting in a Cristal that is utterly profound. Unforgettable. Disgorged: 2020. (AG)
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2008 Louis Roederer Blanc de Blancs Brut Champagne (95RP, 94W&S, 94WE, 93ST, 93VN, 93WS). Wine Advocate: "The 2008 Blanc de Blancs offers a very subtle and substantial, multi-layered bouquet of wet chalk, hazelnuts, stewed apples, lemons, toast, jasmine. Full-bodied and vibrant, this is a highly elegant, very mineral, pure, fresh, firm, tense and persistent Champagne of great complexity. It is still very young but has a great aging potential. Wine Enthusiast: "This latest incarnation of the famous brand is a superb wine. It is on par with, maybe even better than, the already legendary 2002. Its balance is impeccable: Apple and citrus flavors working with the tight minerality to give a textured yet fruity wine. Produced from Roederer's own vineyards which are mainly biodynamic, the wine has its own intense purity and crispness. It has amazing potential and is likely to age for many years. *Cellar Selection* (RV)" (12/2017)

The wonderful Craigellachie distillery remains underappreciated outside of core group of diehard fans. It's oily rich character can be exceptional both in sherry and when aged in fresh bourbon barrel like this one. The old home of Dewar's, this distillery isn't Speyside's prettiest but it is one of its best. Just across the river from the Macallan on the road to Dufftown, the old plant continues to produce full flavored rich malt of the highest quality. This little barrel was distilled in 2008 and filled into a fresh bourbon barrel for 15 years before being bottled at full cask strength without chillfiltration or coloring of any kind. Expect a fruity fragrant side of Craigellachie -Peaches, apple, and fresh fragrant floral aromas. The palate is full of spice, pears and fudge.
The 2008 Cristal Rosé Late-Released is another special 150th Anniversary bottling from Roederer. Interestingly, the Rosé seems to gain less through extended time in bottle and poignettage than the Blanc. Cranberry, chalk, mint, white pepper, slate and citrus peel are all finely sculpted. I look forward to tasting this again in another few years’ time, and specifically, seeing how it compares to the original release with bottle age. (AG)

Bid on this bottle of 2008 Domaine Joseph Roty Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru "Les Fontenys" (93JG, (91-92RP), 92VN). John Gilman: "I often find that the premier cru of Fontenys can often be a bit dense and black fruity out of the blocks, but in the 2008 vintage the really beautiful soil characteristics of the vintage have produced by quite a wide margin the most transparent and refined young vintage of Roty Fontenys that I have ever had the pleasure to taste. The fantastic nose jumps from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, raw cocoa, grilled meat, mustard seed, a great base of soil tones and a deft touch of new wood. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at the core, with a rather atypically suave attack, ripe tannins and lovely focus and balance on the very long, tangy and soil-driven finish..." Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2008 Roberto Voerzio "La Serra" Barolo (96VN, 95WS). Vinous: "The 2008 Barolo La Serra emerges from the glass with dark red fruit, tar, smoke, licorice, spices and new leather. Today the 2008 comes across as surprisingly dark and masculine. The high-toned floral notes that are typical of this site have been replaced by a much darker, brooding register filled with tar, incense and black fruit notes. The wine freshens up beautifully with time in the glass as the aromatics become a bit more expressive. Voerzio's 2008 La Serra is a huge and hugely promising wine. The firm tannins argue for at least a few more years in bottle. A hint of rose petal lingers on the intese finish. (AG) 96+" (04/2012)

It shows fabulous depth and richness backed up by serious, imposing tannins that suggest it has a long life. The Bricco Sarmassa is one of the Barolo's most under the radar wines. This is a prototypical 2008 that captures the very best qualities of the year. Of the 2008 Rubicon Estate "Cuvée Rutherford" Napa Valley Red, Wine Enthusiast writes: "Even though 2008 was not the greatest Cabernet vintage, Rubicon has produced one of the most delicious bottlings of the year. Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, with a little Cab Franc, Petit Verdot and Merlot for complexity, it's so delicious now, you might want to finish off the bottle. Soft and velvety, it appeals with blackberry and cherry pie filling flavors, and the oak appliqué is perfect. The last vintage made by Giacomo Tachis was 2007 and incoming enologist Graziana Grassini claims 2009 as her first vintage. Within the context of this retrospective, the 2008 vintage opens a new chapter, because it is the first wine to show evident tertiary definition and complexity. In fact, the wine performs beautifully with an exalted performance and ethereal aromas. They include cassis, wild berry, crushed mineral, licorice, petrol and grilled herb. This wine is really coming together now and is entering a very exciting moment in its drinking life. It boasts finesse, elegance and grace. Yet, it also shows unmistakable richness and structure that gives the wine an enormous presence in terms of mouthfeel. (ML)" (04/2017)

It is also likely to require quite a bit of time to be at its very best. Even so, the 2008 shimmers with tension, energy and polish. Lemon confit, chalk, chamomile and white flowers are all finely cut in this chiseled, super-expressive edition of the Coeur de Cuvée. Domaine De Charron is really one of those secret gems that I know brandy bros are trying to keep for themselves. I have never been into a cellar more exquisitely taken care of than the gorgeous caves at this tiny Domaine. The commitment to quality and specifically a quality that the rest of the larger apparatus eschews is unparalleled. If there was ever a cross over whiskey drinkers brandy this is the one. Imagine getting a cask strength single barrel 17 year old bourbon for $110? You'd probably assume it was terrible considering the price, but you'd still buy it anyway. This ridiculous brandy is absolutely delicious - 17 years in new gascogne oak and bottled without manipulation of any kind. Let's give it a go. The color is a shimering auburn (1.5). The nose is bold and red fruited, with huge sweet oak notes and dense cherry compote. It's the sweet sticky red fruit that leads the mind toward bourbon on first nosing, it's the rich barrel spices that take you the rest of the way home. On the palate, it pops with huge juicy damson plums, butterscotch, tahitian vanilla and cinnamon spice. The texture isn't quite where a 17 year old bourbon might be, but it's dang close and the oily mouthfeel is a testiment to the quality of their spirit. The finish is long with candied cinnamon and red fruit dominating. A totally under appreciated product that the classical brandy people might find a bit overarching, but the bourbon guys will fall right in love here.
The 2008 Lessona is a serious, serious wine endowed with superb depth and textural richness. Today the tannins are a bit firm, and the wine is, of course, very young, but there is no denying the sheer finesse and pedigree of what is in the glass. Juicy dark cherries, plums, graphite, mint and sweet herbs flesh out beautifully as the 2008 continues to open up. This is a dazzling effort from the De Marchis and Proprieta Sperino. I can’t wait to see how the 2008 ages. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2028. The De Marchi family’s winery in their native Lessona continues its ascent into the upper echelon of Italian wine. These two new releases are absolutely fantastic. (AG)

The 2008 Brut Blanc de Blancs, picked in the Côte des Blancs, underwent full malolactic fermentation and spent over ten years on lees. The small but mighty bottler, now based deep on the Kintyre Peninsula, is doing some very exciting work. They have bottled exceptional casks at excellent prices and are part of an ambitious new project at the old RAF base near Campbeltown. The Campbeltown Bond is one of the most forward-thinking warehouse concepts in Scotland, an autonomous system allowing bottlers to access and assess casks in minutes rather than weeks in a traditional dunnage. This lovely bottling from the historic Speyside distillery of Benriach continues to highlight the versatility and unusual distillates available at the special plant near Elgin. Distilled on December 22nd, 2008 and bottled on August 29th of 2024 at 48.3% ABV, this 14-year-old single cask was released in a limited outturn of just 378 bottles, offering a focused snapshot of the distillery’s character. Thick yet precise, it leans into a clean, lightly smoky profile with subtle leather and confectionary sweetness, recalling open jars of liquorice and nut toffee. The palate balances that gentle savoriness with soft chocolate and a warming, rounded finish. A composed and quietly complex dram that shows Benriach’s ability to marry purity with depth.

From the site Im Weingebirge, fermented in stainless steel, aged in a large oak cask and bottled in April last year, the 2008 Riesling Vinothek is clear and deep on the initially somewhat untamed and gamey as well as flor-inflected and slightly oaky nose that nevertheless indicates very clear and healthy, elegant and concentrated fruit with flinty notes, and it gains clarity and complexity with air. Aeration is highly recommended here and gives way to ginger notes and detailed terroir notes representing the amphibolite, loess and paragneiss of the soil. On the palate, this is a concentrated, fresh and elegant, tightly structured and refreshing mineral Riesling whose grip is still firm and biting (12 milligrams per liter of free sulfur dioxide). This is still a discreet wine that is to be handled with care and a carafe. I kept the bottle for five days to taste the wine again since the first impression represented caged potential rather than revelation. The second tasting showed a little bit more open and finessed, pure, fresh and saline yet still not singing. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Tasted in January 2025. 2008 was not an easy vintage on the Danube. The mild winter was followed by an early budbreak. Flowering from mid-June was delayed, and the entire vegetation period was characterized by heavy rainfall. The summer hardly took place and led to a damp, cool fall. The wines of the vintage tend to be lighter and characterized by a lively acidity structure.(SR)

Bid on this magnum of 2008 Dom Pérignon Brut Champagne (1.5L) (100JA, 98DC, 98IWR, 98JD, 98JH, 98JM, 98JS, 98VN). Jane Anson: "Easily the best Champagne I had all year, first tasted at a château lunch. I couldn't stop thinking about it, and eventually bought a bottle for my husband's 50th. Just so much power and precision, while still having the delicacy, easy glamour and the most moreish delivery of fresh acidities and fleshy citrus. At it opens, toasted brioche, liqourice root and oyster shall curl out of the glass. Richard Geoffroy cellar master." (06/2021)

Pre-Arrival
Amazing aromas of sweet uncooked pie crust with almonds. Then you smell dried apples, apricots and pineapple. Grilled fruits, too. Full-bodied. So tangy and energetic with sizzling acidity and creamy tannins. Flavorful and lightly oxidized at the finish. Smacking my lips. Agile. Ginger and spices. A touch of bitter complexity with some salinity. Extreme character that grabs your attention. 13 years and six months aging on the lees with cork. 3 grams dosage. 71% pinot noir and 29% chardonnay. Don’t serve too cold.
