Bid on this magnum of 2003 Frederic Esmonin Ruchottes Chambertin Grand Cru (1.5L) (94WS). Wine Spectator: "Very smoky in aroma, with a spicy note accenting the core flavors of wild cherry and kirsch. It shows a lot of finesse and a mineral element as it builds intensity across the palate. Good length, with a hint of tobacco. Best from 2009 through 2025. 60 cases imported. (BS)" (05/2006)

Bid on this magnum of 2003 Garric Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L). The inaugural vintage of this small boutique winery located in Calistoga, a joint venture between two friends Gary and Ricardo (hence the name, 'Gar-Ric'). They sourced fruit from two premium, low-yielding vineyards to produce this 100% Cabernet, which was aged in 80% new Marchive barrels. "Richard Betts, MS: 'Loads of precocious personality highlighted with rich black fruits and heady brown spices. It feels thoroughly complete with bass notes of coffee and milk chocolate.' Jason Smith, MS: 'After my initial taste of Garric, the first words out of my mouth were, why didn't you bring a second bottle? This seductive and spicy cabernet is rich, full-bodied and well balanced. Garric is a tremendous first release that has a long, silky finish that begs you to have another glass.'" (from the winery)

Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 2003 Siduri "Garys' Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir (90CG). Connoisseurs Guide: " *One Star* Another very ripe Pinot from Siduri, this one certainly favors its concentrated side, but also shows enough pure varietal fruit to live up to the name. It is deep, cherryish and tinged with notes of cocoa and caramel in the nose, and its fleshy mouthfeel joins with suggestions of velvet and convincing fruit to overcome any tendency to latter palate heat." Bid on this 3 liter of 2003 Latour, Pauillac (3L) (100JS, 100RP, 98WS, 97ST, 97VN). Wine Advocate: "2003 was one of the hottest, earliest Bordeaux vintages ever. Some vines suffered from lack of moisture, but old vines and clay subsoil at Enclos saw this vineyard through. The Merlot harvest occurred between September 8 and 13, and the Cabernet Sauvignon was picked between September 22 and 30. The 2003 Latour is a blend of 81% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot and 1% Petit Verdot. Six percent of the press wine was added to the final blend. It has a medium to deep garnet-purple color, then wow—it explodes from the glass with bombastic black and blue fruits, followed up by meat, wood smoke, sandalwood and Indian spice accents with underlying floral wafts. The palate is full, rich, velvety, seductive and very long on the finish. (LPB)" (02/2019)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Screaming Eagle Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (98RP, 96WE). Wine Advocate: "This 2003 was showing spectacularly well, and based on my recollection, I think I may have liked it even more than the 2002, which is the reverse of how I felt a decade ago. One of the biggest (14.6% alcohol) wines made by Screaming Eagle during this period, it boasts an opaque ruby/purple color as well as classic, pure, creme de cassis, cedarwood and hints of Asian soy sauce and forest floor notes. The multidimensional aromatics are followed by a full-bodied, silky-textured, opulent, rich, atypically big wine that is impeccably well-balanced. It is just starting to come into its own. Four to five more years in the cellar will prove magical, and this 2003 is one of the candidates for the wine of the vintage. (RP)" (06/2013)

Aromas and flavors of pineapples, citrus oil, hazelnuts, and crushed rock/mineral-like characteristics are found in this long, defined Chardonnay. (RP)" (02/2005)

Am I being too stingy with the 2003 Chateau Margaux? A wine of extraordinary complexity and intensity, it reveals a deep purple color, a style not unlike the 1990 Margaux (possibly even more concentrated), a velvety texture, and notes of spring flowers interwoven with camphor, melted licorice, creme de cassis, and pain grille. Not a blockbuster, it offers extraordinary intensity as well as a surreal delicacy/lightness. There is riveting freshness to this offering, which tips the scales at a lofty (for this estate) 13.5% alcohol, as well as an alluring sweetness and accessibility. It probably will tighten up over the next few years. Nevertheless, it is a profound Chateau Margaux that brings to mind a hypothetical blend of the 1982 and 1990. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2035.

Dense, bluish/purple, it offers gorgeous notes of espresso roast, blackberry and blueberry liqueur, acacia flowers and a touch of chocolate. It is full-bodied, opulent and seems close to full maturity, as it is evolving quickly. The wine is full-bodied, rich and should be drunk over the next decade. (RP)" (08/2015)

Of the 2003 Pierre Usseglio "Cuvée de Mon Aïeul" Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Wine Advocate writes: "The best bottle of this I've had (and I've had plenty), Usseglio's 2003 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvée de Mon Aieul is a blockbuster and one of the true stars of this vintage. Almost all Grenache (there's a small part of Syrah and Cinsault) that was harvest between September 1-13, partially destemmed and aged in both tank and foudre, this massive, voluptuous effort is almost overflowing with notes of ground herbs, chocolate dusted meats, black fruits and licorice. Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Deus ex Machina is a wine that can hit perfection on any given day. In this lineup, it seems just slightly behind the off-the-charts, 2010, 2007 and 2005. Just now starting to show hints of maturity (bottles from my cellar show more evolution than this one), it’s an incredible Chateauneuf that offers textbook kirsch, licorice, graphite, blackcurrants and spice to go with a full-bodied, layered and voluptuously-styled feel on the palate. Like the other 2003 from this estate, it shows no signs of over ripeness, possesses sweet tannin and beautiful purity. (JD)" (08/2014)

Bid on this bottle of 2003 Domaine du Pegau "Cuvée Reservée" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (98RP, 97WS, 96JD, 93VN). Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvée Reservee stands out as one of the all-time great wines made by Laurence Feraud and her father, Paul. I remember first tasting it from a large tank as it was still fermenting and it was already impressive! It is a full-bodied, powerful wine that must tip the scales at close to 15.5% natural alcohol. I don’t think this big, chewy, voluptuously textured wine will ever close down. Dark plum/garnet with the classic Provencal display of garrigue, lavender, pepper, kirsch and Asian plum sauce, this full-throttle wine has splendid concentration, silky tannins, and a very voluptuous texture. Pungent red berry, floral and mineral aromas are reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Deeply flavored but not heavy, with sweet red fruit and floral pastille flavors and an undercurrent of tangy minerals. The finish is slightly firm, with alder and plum skin details, but this has pretty impressive composure considering the vintage. (JM, Web-2018)"

Such a great example of old vine power with matched elegance elegance. This is really just now starting to drink well. But, can be cellared for many years to come. Fresh yet hearty style of wine which should definitely be had with a nice home cooked meal.
Though I tasted this from bottle four years ago and gave a score of 100 points, I opened another bottle of the 2003 Vouvray Cuvée Constance recently to compare it with the 2015, and the 2003 vintage proves to be an outstanding sweet wine. The nose is intense, ripe, generous and precise, with aromas of dates rolled in bacon, nuts, almonds and dried and stewed stone fruit. On the palate, this is a highly concentrated, sweet but structured Chenin with fine tannins and a sweet, long and intense finish. The same wine from the bottle opened in 2015 is fascinatingly complex on the nose, with spicy tobacco flavors and searing acidity. What grip and tension here. It offers mocha and nougat flavors, great tension, raisins, apricots, salts and crushed stones. (SR)
Bid on this 7-half-bottle lot of 2003 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (98JS, 97WS, 96TWI, 95RP, 93VN). James Suckling: A massive Yquem, this has a dense palate that is almost chewy like a red. Full and very sweet, with notes of dried apricot, pineapple, and papaya on the palate. Long, with a vanilla-coconut tart finish. What a wine, voluptuous, sexy, and luscious. 147 grams of RS. Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2003 Pahlmeyer Napa Valley Merlot (93CG, 92RP, 90VN, 90WS). Connoisseurs Guide: "Very pure, precisely defined cherryish fruit sits juts beneath an enormous complement of vanillin oak and sweet, root-beer-like spice in the nose, and the tandem of cherries and creamy oak is at the heart of this extravagant wine's highly concentrated and enveloping flavors. There is no missing the Pahlmeyer stamp of extract and richness with this one, but, in this outing, the wine is remarkably well-balanced, and its deep and persistent flavors are in no way diminished or otherwise limited by the pushy heat peeking through its lingering finish." Connoisseurs Guide: "This impressive, generously filled and very solid young wine is at once both powerful and remarkably well-balanced and delivers loads of optimally ripened, curranty fruit juxtaposed with just the right measure of complementary oak. It is quite full on the palate and comes complete with lots of Cabernet tannins, but even as astringency crowds in at the finish, its confident fruit refuses to quit. It is not, nor will ever be the picture of elegance, but its stunning depth and keen varietal precision raise great expectations for a most handsome maturity some eight to ten years hence. New
This was the finest performance by this wine that I have seen since it was released. I did not expect the 2003 Chateau Margaux to show this well in a vintage where the southern part of the Medoc was clearly less impressive than the north. However, it is a beautiful, dark plum/purple-tinged effort with sensational aromatics, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a youthfulness, precision and freshness that belie what one generally associates with this vintage. It can be drunk now and over the next 15-20 years. Kudos to Chateau Margaux. (RP)
Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 2003 Far Niente "Cave Collection" Oakville Cabernet Sauvignon (94WE, 93RP). But in the mouth the fruit explodes in intensely ripe black currants and milk chocolate. The tannins are rich and softly complex. A complete Cabernet that is luscious now, but has the balance to develop, if you can keep your hands off it. " (12/2006)

Insider's Advantage
The 2003 "Cannubi" Barolo from G.B. Burlotto comes from the iconic Cannubi vineyard, one of the most prestigious sites in Barolo, known for producing wines of great elegance, complexity, and depth. The 2003 vintage was marked by a hot, dry summer, which resulted in riper fruit and more robust wines. The 2003 G.B. Burlotto "Cannubi" Barolo is a robust and complex wine that reflects both the power of the vintage and the elegance of the Cannubi vineyard. With its ripe fruit, firm structure, and long finish, this wine is drinking well now but can also be cellared for further development. A classic and expressive Barolo from one of the region’s most esteemed vineyards.
Pre-Arrival
Tasted at the Chevillon “Vaucrains” vertical in London. The 2003 has a typically (for the vintage) ripe, almost New World, Martinborough-like nose with macerated dark cherries and just a touch of burnt match. The palate is well balanced and sinewy, robust and rather bold tannins, thick and a little brawny perhaps but it has a very correct, tannic finish that is completely in synch with the layers of ripe fruit. Give this time: it might surprise a few that wrote off the vintage although it is atypical of Chevillon’s style. (NM)
Il Paradiso di Frassina sits just north of Montalcino, a site inhabited since at least 1000 AD and restored beginning in 1999 by Carlo Cignozzi. The estate is renowned for its “Mozart Vineyard,” where more than a hundred speakers broadcast Mozart’s music among Sangiovese vines as part of long-term scientific research supported by the Universities of Florence and Pisa to study sound-wave effects on vine growth and resilience. The winery produces Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino using traditional methods, with grapes grown in a landscape shaped by Val d’Orcia’s soils and climate. The cellar continues the musical environment, integrating sound into both vineyard and aging practices.
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Claret (97RP, 95WE, 93CG, 93ST). Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Reserve Claret is a blend of 67% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Sauvignon that achieved 14.4% alcohol. An exquisite candidate for wine of the vintage, it comes from a vineyard high on the summit of Spring Mountain. Eighty-three percent of the fruit comes from Sonoma and the rest from Napa County as the vineyard sits astride the county lines. Its dark plum/garnet color reveals a slight lightening at the edge. A beautiful nose of cedarwood, forest floor, red and black currants, kirsch and plum is followed by a full-bodied wine with great freshness, a rich, textured mouthfeel and sensational concentration with no heaviness. This is an uplifting, quintessential mountain Cabernet Sauvignon that outperforms the vintage. (RP)" (06/2013)

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2003 Pride Mountain "Reserve" Sonoma-Napa Counties Cabernet Sauvignon (99RP, 94WE, 93WS, 92CG). Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve is an equal part blend of Napa and Sonoma fruit. There is no doubting the Cabernet Sauvignon in this wine! Classic notes of cedarwood, underbrush, licorice, black currants and tobacco leaf are textbook definitions of this varietal. The color is even denser than the Reserve Claret's, and the bouquet offers additional notes of Chinese black tea. Elegant with great acid as well as stunning concentration, richness and a full-bodied mouthfeel, this is another world-class effort that pushes the envelope toward perfection. It is a remarkable success for the vintage, partly due to the fact that the extremes of weather experienced on the valley floor were less problematic for these high altitude sites. (RP)" (06/2013)

The ripeness and exuberance of the year comes through in spades as this dramatic, opulent wine shows off its radiant personality. The 2003 can be enjoyed now, but it could also use another few years for the tannins to soften. Still, the 2003 is pretty hard to resist today. This is an exceptional, deeply satisfying Mouton endowed with notable richness but also exceptional balance. Hints of toffee, torrefaction and dark spices are laced into the finish. Jeb Dunnuck: "A prodigious beast of a wine that's now starting to shed just a touch of its considerable baby fat, the 2003 Château Montrose is based on 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. It shows the richness of the vintage with its ripe, opulent core of fruit, yet it freshens up noticeably with time in the glass, offering currants, mulberries, smoked tobacco, minty herbs, and licorice. Full-bodied, deep, and powerful on the palate, it still has classic Bordeaux focus and structure. It's drinking brilliantly today with a decant and has another 20-30 years of prime drinking." Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Latour, Pauillac (100JS, 100RP, 100TWI, (96-98WE), 98WS, 97ST, 97VN).

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2003 Merus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, 92ST, 92WS). Wine Advocate: "The 2003 Cabernet Sauvignon (97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Malbec and Petit Verdot) boasts an inky/purple color along with a rich bouquet of creosote, blueberries, blackberries, sweet earth, and smoky, spicy oak. With full body, abundant fruit, glycerin, and sweet tannin, a multilayered mouthfeel, and stunning upside potential, it is accessible enough to be drunk in 2-3 years, or cellared for two decades.
