Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Robert Groffier Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru (95ST, 93RP, 91BH). Int'l Wine Cellar: "Medium ruby. Knockout grand cru aromas of macerated berries, licorice, jasmine, animal fur, tar and exotic baking spices; a great example of Bonnes-Mares, showing both the floral and animal aspects of the cru. Fills the mouth with sappy sucrosity, lifted by a strong floral element. A wine of great energy, finishing with firm but sweet tannins. Makes a strong argument that great grand cru Burgundy can be made at a yield of 42 hectoliters per hectare. (ST)" (03/2002)

Bid on this magnum of 1999 Shafer "Hillside Select" Stags Leap District Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L) (95VN, 94CG, 94WS, 93RP). Vinous: "Bright, saturated ruby. Very ripe aromas of black cherry, licorice, molten chocolate, mint and minerals; some very ripe suggestions. Generous, plush and powerful if still youthful and brooding. The flavors of dark berries and spices show a chocolatey ripeness as well as a savory tobacco quality. Conveys a strong impression of depth and a tactile impression of extract. This thick, savory wine finishes with strong but suave tannins and terrific breadth and length, filling the mouth without turning ponderous. Very impressive! (ST)" (05/2019)

Vintage Bottlers’ inaugural 25-year-old Maiden’s Blend is an ambitious and deeply considered project, marrying carefully selected parcels from across Scotland into a single cohesive vision, further elevated through a collaboration with artist Jim Moir, better known as Vic Reeves, whose distinctive artwork adorns the labels and packaging. The youngest spirit in this blend was distilled in 1999 and laid into a first fill sherry butt for a full quarter century. This single cask expression (#8) was bottled at 43.8% ABV, offering a softer, more approachable take on the broader blend concept. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. The nose opens with nuts and gentle spice, followed by a pleasant oily vanilla with time in the glass. The palate highlights classic Speyside sweetness alongside lightly smoky malt and a subtle thread of treacle toffee. The structure is more delicate but well integrated, with grain and malt working in harmony. The finish is shorter, offering nutty toffee and a whisper of peat smoke. A balanced and quietly expressive cask.

Founded in 2011, L’Encantada is an independent Armagnac house known for sourcing mature spirits from small, traditional estates. This 1999 Bas-Armagnac comes from Del Cassou, identified as cask #32, and carries a 22-year age statement—an estate- and cask-specific presentation from Gascony.
Bid on this bottle of 1999 Domaine Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru "Butteaux" (91BH). Burghound: "(with thanks to Rebecca Rapaszky). As is often the case with Butteaux it has aged extremely well and while the term youthful wouldn't quite be accurate, this does still possess good freshness on the now fully mature aromas of shellfish, iodine and pear where there are no elements of sous-bois or truffle present. There is good richness and reasonably good verve to the delicious, round and solidly complex flavors that possess fine length. While in no danger of falling off a cliff any time soon this has reached its peak and I would be inclined to drink this up over the next 5 years or so." (03/2016)

Bid on this 1-half-bottle lot of 1999 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml) (97DC, 96TWI, 93JG, 92RP). Decanter: The intensity of the rich, heady melange of apricots, orange pith, ginger and mango flavours is profound, but the balance of all the elements and its luscious crème brûlée texture is what makes you swoon. It’s complex, savoury, rich, intense, long and elegant. The 1999 vintage was classified as difficult, with rain in September and October, but the fruit retained fabulous acidity that perfectly balances the extraordinary residual sugar of 128.2g per litre into dreamy, harmonious meld. This single cask expression (#6) was bottled at 44.6% ABV, offering a singular take on the broader blend concept. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. What immediately stands out is the richness and composure. The nose opens with treacle toffee and toasted Brazil nuts, a dense, inviting profile that speaks to both quality wood and mature spirit. The palate is plush and velvety, built around nougat and soft confectionary sweetness, with a gentle thread of smoke and cereal grain keeping everything grounded. The finish carries that warmth forward, returning to toffee-laden richness with a soft glow. Four distinct barrels exist of this exquisite rare blend, each with its own personality.

Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. The nose is immediate and assertive, with a medicinal edge layered over dense cocoa butter and dark chocolate richness. With a bit of air or water, dark berries, nutmeg, and cinnamon emerge alongside a subtle honeyed sweetness. The palate is structured and intense, unfolding slowly with spice, fruit, and grain in balance. The finish leans drier, with pipe tobacco and gentle smoke fading steadily. One of the boldest casks in the lineup.

I won’t be surprised if the other Pouchegu bottlings overshadow this incredible little cask. It seems many people are still stuck in a 2012 mindset, assuming a brandy distilled in 1999 is too young to be exceptional. But here we are, more than a decade after discovering this remarkable domaine, and the late-’90s distillates I’ve tasted carry the unmistakable touch of the master who crafted them. It’s unfortunate that most will overlook this release—and that our allocation at these under-market prices is so limited—but for those willing to trust me and take the plunge, I have no doubt you’ll be reaching out later to say thank you for the nudge. Let’s dig in. The color shows a classic deep copper (1.0). The nose is packed with pungent aromatics: gorgeous tilleul honey, perfectly pulled light-roast espresso, lemon oil, apricot jam, Dunhill Aperitif, sencha, and sandalwood. The palate is juicy and exceptionally well-structured, with a lift and brightness neither of the other two vintages display—more honey, dark underbrush, yellow fruits, and perique-like dried tobacco notes. The finish expands into bold spice and deep black and red fruits. A departure from the more varnished character of the older vintages, perhaps, but an idiosyncratic and deeply satisfying style in its own right.

The youngest spirit in this blend was distilled in 1999 and laid into a first fill sherry butt for a full quarter century. This single cask expression (#9) was bottled at 43.9% ABV, offering a beautifully composed middle ground within the range. Word is these are casks lost within the transitions through the many stages of Edrington Group's blending operations. The nose layers dried fruits, dark sugar, and a subtle earthy undertone. On the palate, sherried sweetness, soft grain, and gentle smoke work in concert with excellent integration. There is a pleasing roundness here, neither as bold as #7 nor as delicate as #8. The finish is smooth and warming, with lingering caramelized sugar and faint smoke. A confident and harmonious expression.

Sweet floral notes wrap around a core of super-expressive red stone fruits as the wine opens up in the glass. Over the last few years the 1999 has continued to put on weight. Today, it is a much more extroverted and generous wine than it was at the outset. The 1999 can be enjoyed now and over the next 15-20 years, perhaps longer. This is a brilliant showing. Drawn from the private reserves of Scotland’s oldest independent bottler, this Ben Nevis Chairman’s Stock release exemplifies the depth and individuality that have defined William Cadenhead Ltd since its founding in 1842. Bottled at 51.5% ABV after 25 years of maturation in a single bourbon hogshead, this whisky reflects the long held Cadenhead philosophy of presenting spirit in its purest form, with no chill filtration or added colour. The Chairman’s Stock range represents exceptional casks once reserved by the late Chairman Hedley G Wright, released sparingly to preserve the integrity and rarity of these mature stocks. On the nose, this Ben Nevis opens with an expressive array of strawberry lace, banana bread, dried pineapple, kiwi, gooseberries, and walnuts, offering both brightness and depth. The palate unfolds with honeycomb, dried apricots, white grapes, and soft icing sugar, balanced by the distillery’s signature weight and texture. The finish is long and composed, revealing lemon zest, crystallized ginger, gentle pepper, and herbal undertones that linger with quiet authority. This is a beautifully mature Highland malt that showcases Ben Nevis at its most elegant, pairing fruit driven complexity with the structural confidence that only long aging and careful cask selection can provide.
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1999 Pianpolvere Soprano "Bussia" Barolo Riserva (90VN). Vinous: "(from the old Riccardo Fenocchio property; Migliorini is grafting over the merlot vines in this holding to nebbiolo) Deep red. Marzipan and flowers on the nose, with strong smoky, nutty oak. Fat and mouthfilling but unevolved. Broad but quite dry, with youthfully aggressive, toothfurring tannins currently overshadowing the wine's fruit. Comes across as different in style from Migliorini's other Barolos - or is it simply going through an awkward phase following the bottling? This may well merit a higher score when it's released in 2004. (ST) 90+" (11/2002)

Bid on this bottle of 1999 Chris Ringland Shiraz Barossa Range South Australia (OWC - 98RP) in original wood. Wine Advocate: "The Chris Ringland (formerly known as Three Rivers Shiraz), is aged 42 months in 100% new French oak, and is rarely racked until bottling, represents an extraordinary expression of Barossa Shiraz. The intense 1999, released in 2004, demonstrates that this vintage is somewhat underrated after all the hype over 1998. From a vineyard planted in 1910, its inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of lavender, lard, smoke, licorice, blackberries, cassis, espresso roast, chocolate, and pepper. Full-bodied, slightly less voluminous than the perfect 1998, with an unctuous texture, sweet tannin, and a 70+ second finish, this magnificent, still young Shiraz should be accessible in 3-5 years, and last for two decades. Drink through 2024. (RP)" (10/2004)

Bid on this bottle of 1999 Castello dei Rampolla "Vigna d'Alceo" Toscana (99RP, 97VN, 96ST, 95WS). Wine Advocate: "The monumental 1999 Vigna d'Alceo is a 20, 000-bottle cuvee of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Sangiovese aged in oak. It boasts an exceptionally provocative nose of liquid minerals, graphite, plums, creme de cassis, and cherry liqueur. It is fabulously concentrated yet remarkably light on its feet, with medium to full body, sweet tannin, and layer upon layer of flavor nuances. There is plenty of glycerin in this rich, but neither heavy nor overbearing effort. This is a thrilling tour de force! However, it requires cellaring. (RP)" (10/2001)

A deeply-flavored, structured wine, it offers expressive aromatics and layers of sweet black cherries, roses and tar in a powerful, intense style. It needs at least a few additional years of cellaring for the oak to soften, but it is a terrific effort. (AG) " (05/2008)

Captivating nose combines blackcurrant, crushed-rock minerality, licorice and violet, complemented by notes of cocoa powder, leather and earth. Densely packed and seriously concentrated, showing an almost chocolatey ripeness that's leavened by integrated acidity. Flavors of dark berries, minerals and flowers saturate the palate and spread out on the very suave, subtly long aftertaste. There's no easy sweetness here but the wine's noble tannins and considerable finesse give it great appeal today. This beautiful blend should go on for many more years on its extract and balance. Bid on this bottle of 1999 Luciano Sandrone "Cannubi Boschis" Barolo (95RP, 93ST, 93VN, 92WS). Wine Advocate: "The 1999 is easily one of the best wines in the series. It offers rich sensations of spices, flowers, toasted oak and minerals along with well-delineated layers of ripe dark fruit, menthol, and eucalyptus flavors, finishing with exceptional structure, length and freshness. I didn’t taste the superb 1989 (see above) at age six, but when I tasted this 1999 on a later occasion, the first thing that came into my mind was a young version of that wine. The 1999 will require at least a few years of bottle age and will start to be at its best around 2009, after which it should last another decade. (AG)" (04/2007)

Dense, sweet and chewy; a rather broad-shouldered cabernet for Forman, with primary fruit flavors of mulberry and cranberry complicated by a cedar note. Pre-Arrival
Here is another great wine from Anne Gros, which will reward those with the patience and nouse to cellar for an extended period. The 1999 Richebourg Grand Cru is backward and reticent on the nose, but it only takes a few swirls of the glass and it reveals gorgeous black cherry and raspberry fruit mixed with a hint of dark chocolate from some residual new oak that will be subsumed. The palate is medium-bodied with fine acidity. There is a smorgasbord of lush raspberry and wild strawberry fruit cloaked in new oak, but the wood does not obscure the grape variety or vineyard, allowing the character of the wine to be expressed with hints of white pepper sprinkled over the finish. What a great Richebourg, but one that I would actually afford another five years in the cellar. This is long-term. (NM)
