Bid on this bottle of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru (96RP, 94WS, 93BH). Wine Advocate: "The Richebourg was an explosive wine with an earthy, cinnamon, gingery, soy sauce aroma backed up with the intense smell of plums and toasty new oak. Extremely rich, full bodied, and awesomely proportioned, this heroic wine should be drunk from the late nineties through the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It seems bigger, fuller, and more powerful than even the celestial 1985. The prices for the wines of the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti may be exorbitant but the quality of the wines produced in the eighties is truly remarkable. (RP)" (12/1989)

The 1988 is a backward-styled Yquem, built along the lines of the extraordinary 1975. With a honeyed, smoky, orange/coconut/pineapple-scented nose, this powerful wine possesses full body, layers of highly concentrated, extracted flavors, considerable botrytis, and a sensational finish. (RP)_

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Emmanuel Rouget Echézeaux Grand Cru (96WS, 94BH). Wine Spectator: "A plush texture and expansive berry and cassis aromas and flavors make this immediately appealing. The complexity develops on the long finish in layer after layer; it's obvious this is going to be a great wine. The length is stunning and it's tempting. *Top 100 Wines of 1990*" (11/1990)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti La Tâche Grand Cru (97JG, 93BH, 92WS). John Gilman: "The 1988 La Tâche may in the very end, prove to be a hair better than the very fine 1990. It is clearly one of the monuments of the vintage, and though it is still (like so many of the very best 1988s) still a touch buttoned up behind its tangy acidity, the depth, purity and overpowering and intoxicating perfume of this amazing wine make it very clear that the greatness of legend is simply a matter of time. The haunting bouquet simply explodes from the glass in a cornucopia of red fruit, cinnamon, cloves, developing notes of La Tâche beetroot, intense sous bois, coffee, duck, minerals, roses and cedar. On the palate the wine is very, very deep, bright and tangy, with a huge core of sweet fruit firmly enmeshed in a girdle of tangy acidity. There are still some tannins present here, but they are already beginning to peel away... " (04/2006)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 E. Guigal "La Turque" Côte-Rôtie (100RP, 98JD). Wine Advocate: "Deep purple-colored, with grilled meat and smoky, barbecue-like aromas beginning to emerge, along with lavishly ripe scents of black plums and cassis, the 1988 La Turque is not quite as suppressed aromatically as La Mouline. This thick, unctuously textured, full-bodied, monster wine is close to reaching its plateau of drinkability. The wine exhibits awesome concentration, terrific purity, and, amazingly, no evidence of the 42 months it spent in 100% new oak casks. Very full and rich, and potentially the longest-lived La Turque yet made, this wine should be legendary. (RP)" (12/1996)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 E. Guigal "La Mouline" Côte-Rôtie (100JD, 100RP, 98ST, 95WS). Wine Advocate: "Among so many exceptional La Mouline's, this is one of the most profound. At the same time, it is atypically backward, and has been slow to evolve. Still dark purple-colored, with only a hint of the flamboyant Mouline aromatics, this thick, super concentrated, full-bodied, tannic La Mouline is loaded with fruit, massive, and full-bodied, but still in need of time to fully shed its cloak of tannin. It is likely to be the longest-lived La Mouline since the 1978 and 1969. (RP)" (12/1996)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 E. Guigal "La Landonne" Côte-Rôtie (100RP, 98JD). Wine Advocate: "An opaque purple color and a closed but exciting nose of truffles, minerals, Asian spices, and fruitcake. When the wine hits the mouth with its enormous weight and extraction of flavor, one can't help but be seduced by such enormous richness and purity. Nevertheless, there is still a remarkably high level of tannin (sweet rather than astringent), a youthful, unevolved fruit character, and flavors that stain the palate. After tasting this wine, one feels like brushing one's teeth ... it is that rich. (RP)" (01/1997)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Hubert Lignier Clos de la Roche Grand Cru (95BH, 94JG, 94RP). Burghound: "A fully mature yet still remarkably fresh nose of spice and smoky black fruit that displays no sous-bois introduces big, robust, intense and quite powerful flavors that are underpinned by moderately firm though well-integrated tannins, all wrapped in an explosive finish that offers stunning complexity and outstanding persistence. This is not an elegant wine and certainly not by the standards of a domaine that, in the era, was known for fashioning some of the most refined and elegant wines in all of Burgundy. However, it is as I say a very powerful wine that will still be in fine shape 20 years from now. Tasted on multiple occasions and while the tannins are a bit softer each time the essential character of this wine remains consistent." (03/2014)

The wine's zesty acidity brings everything into extraordinary clarity. (RP)" (12/1997)

Bid on this bottle of 1988 Silver Oak Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (92JG). John Gilman: "A lone bottle in my cellar to track, the ’88 Silver Oak 'Napa' bottling showed significantly better at age nineteen than I would have ever imagined. If I had known it was going to turn out this delicious with extended bottle age, I would have cellared a case, rather than just a single bottle. The nose is deep, very pure, and shows none of the signs of excessive weediness that plagued this bottling from Silver Oak in many vintages. The very classy bouquet is a blend of pure black cherries, woodsmoke, Rutherford dust, a touch of lead pencil, delicate notes of wood spice and a distinct topnote of violet. On the palate the wine is medium-full, refined and still retains a nice 'cool' touch of austerity that lends precision in the mid-palate, with good depth, just a touch of tannin still remaining, and good length and grip on the complex finish." Bid on this bottle of 1988 Domaine Armand Rousseau Chambertin Grand Cru (93BH, 93RP, 93VN). Vinous: "The 1988 Chambertin is powerful and burly, but it also lacks the fruit density of the other wines in this tasting that share its virile personality. Hints of tobacco, smoke and leather add shades of complexity. I suspect the 1988 will drink well for another 15+ years, even if it will probably never reach the heights of some of the more profound vintages. I have had better examples of the 1988. Bid on this bottle of 1988 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (93JG, 92WS, 91BH). John Gilman: "In our vertical of the Méo Clos de Vougeot, the 1988 really stood out for its suave balance and refined integration of its remaining tannins and is really one of the prettiest 1988s that I have tasted in the last few years. The bouquet is quite red fruity in this vintage, wafting from the glass in a bright and fully mature blend of strawberries, cherries, nutskin, coffee, a complex base of soil, a discreet touch of vanillin oak and a nice topnote of spices. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully transparent in personality, with bright, seamless acids, a fine core, impeccable balance and lovely length and grip on the classy finish. This is really a strong 1988 that is drinking beautifully, but has decades and decades of life still ahead of it." (05/2016)

However, it is the amazing acidity of this wine that will provide the framework for aging, as the 1988 La Tâche should prove to be one of the longest lived vintages of the post-war era. Utterly and humblingly profound. " (04/2006)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Grace Family Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Grace Family Vineyards was planted with cuttings from the famed Bosché vineyard and first harvested in 1978. Those first grapes were handpicked by family and friends and taken to Caymus Winery in the back of a station wagon. This Napa Valley vineyard sure has come a long way over the last 35 years, but their wines still have that personal, family touch.

The 1988 Barolo (magnum) is a very pleasant surprise. Over the years, it has been inconsistent, but this magnum is terrific. Bright and nuanced for a wine of its age and era, the 1988 offers gorgeous Nebbiolo character to complement its mid-weight personality. Although the 1988 doesn’t have the presence of either the 1989 or 1990, it more than holds its own in this flight, and that is saying a lot. (AG)
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage (97DC, 95JD, 94ST, 94VN, 93RP, 92JG). Decanter: "A vintage that really expresses its granite core, framed by strict, upright tannins and bright acidity. This is a highly structural Hermitage, with vibrant cherry fruits. Unlikely to improve as such, but no hurry to drink. Pair with 60-day-aged beef and soy sauce. (MW)" (10/2020)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Soldera (Case Basse) "Intistieti" Toscana (96VN). Vinous: "At nearly thirty years of age, the 1988 Brunello di Montalcino remains bright, vibrant and full of life. Sweet red cherry and plum flavors are pushed forward, with deeper earthy, floral and spice notes that develop in the glass. An intriguing interplay of nuance and energy separates the 1988 from most wines in this range. It remains one of my favorite Soldera wines from the 1980s. This bottle is a bit softer than others have been, but the wine is still complete, super-expressive and inviting. (AG)" (10/2016)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1988 Domaine Maume Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru (92BH). Burghound: "A distinctly earthy and sauvage-inflected nose has now gone entirely tertiary in character with full-on aromas of sous-bois. Those characters are also present on the dense, powerful and utterly delicious flavors that are rustic yet have largely resolved the supporting tannins on the complex finish. This is really quite good and while it will not win any awards for refinement, there is little doubt that it's a Maume Mazis. I would add that while this has definitely reached its peak it should be capable of holding for at least another decade." (12/2017)
