Bid on this bottle of 1985 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Richebourg Grand Cru (100WS, 98RP, 96JS, 95JG, 95VN, 94BH). Wine Spectator: "A truly great wine. Amazing concentration, brimming with focused cherry, plum, smoke and cinnamon flavors, all tied together into a harmonious package that keeps echoing and changing with every sip. Beautifully smooth but firm on the palate, it has the uncanny feeling of power with no weight, only mass. *Top 100 Wines of 1988* (HS)" (02/1988)

Bid on this bottle of 1985 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-Conti Grand Cru (100RP, 99WS, 94BH). Wine Advocate: "The Romanee-Conti is utterly mind blowing. The heady, intoxicating bouquet delivered penetrating and sublime aromas that were even more intense than those from the La Tache. On the palate, there is a veritable smorgasbord of earthly and heavenly delights. Needless to say, it is very rich, very opulent, and very concentrated. Red Burgundy and red wine do not get any better than this. (RP)" (01/1990)

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot Grand Cru (96RP). Wine Advocate: "Tasted at the Domaine Engel tasting in London, the 1985 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru was a brilliant mature Burgundy at its peak. It has a fragrant and disarmingly pure bouquet with red plum, orange rind, minerals and rose petal aromas that almost "swarm" towards you. The palate is very well structured with black rather than red fruit infused with subtle marmalade and sour cherry notes. It is blessed with palpable mineralité, the terroir coming through uninhibited. What a fabulous mature Clos Vougeot from the late Philippe Engel, about as good as this medieval grand cru gets. À point. (NM)" (01/2017)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Cockburn Vintage Port (90WS). Wine Spectator: "Shows an abundance of thick, rich fruit and plenty of backbone. Very inky, dense color, with a rich, floral nose of berries and cherries. Full-bodied, medium sweet, with massive anise and cherry flavors and extremely well integrated tannins and acidity. Bid on this bottle of 1985 Tenuta San Guido "Sassicaia" Bolgheri (100DC, 100RP, 98VN). Wine Advocate: "... The soaring beauty of this landmark Sassicaia literally transcends the rather mundane realm of wine critique with its string of adjectives and wearisome descriptors. It hardly deserves to be treated like any of the other gorgeous wines we tasted on this glorious day. In truth, the 1985 Sassicaia does reveal a new perspective onto its perfection each time you have the fortune to taste it. I noticed a layer of bright almond-like sweetness... The wine seems to be getting younger, not older... Of the various samples presented from the 1980s, this wine exhibited the brightest garnet color and the most youthful personality. It shows stunning volume. The integration is seamless and the wine's many complicated pieces fit together with utmost precision like a jigsaw puzzle that renders a most beautiful Italian masterpiece when admired at completion. Bid on this bottle of 1985 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (99JS, 95JG, 93DC). James Suckling: "What an awe-inspiring nose of currants, shaved lead pencil, white truffles and earth. It's full-bodied and enveloped by silky tannins that lead to an earthy, long finish. Old, traditional Bordeaux with soul and remarkable complexity. Sensational. " (10/2015)

Bid on this 4-bottle lot of 1985 Duckhorn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Founded by Dan and Margaret Duckhorn in 1976, Duckhorn Vineyards has been crafting classic Bordeaux varietals from the Napa Valley for over 30 years. Famed for their Merlot wines, somehow the Duckhorns managed to sneak their Cabernet Sauvignon wines out the door without anyone noticing. A combination of estate and purchased fruit from Napa Valley allowed Dan and Margaret to demonstrate the blending skills they picked up in Bordeaux.

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Château Rayas "Réservé" Châteauneuf-du-Pape (96VN, 94JG, 93RP). Vinous: "I was blown away by the 1985 Châteauneuf-du-Pape. A wine that continued to improve in the glass, it was richly-textured and opulent, with expansive fruit that lingered on the palate for an eternity. It came across as incredibly youthful, in fact I would have never pegged it for a 22-year-old wine had I tasted it blind. (AG)" (08/2007)

Bid on this bottle of 1985 L'Evangile, Pomerol (95RP, 95VN, 93JG, 92WS). Vinous: "The 1985 L'Evangile is a Pomerol that took many years to come round—bottles were still quite impenetrable after 20 years. Now, after almost 40 years, this is probably my favourite vintage for the estate after the 1989. Slightly darker in colour, this offers black fruit, black truffle and leather as more loamy scents surface with aeration. I appreciate the complexity of this Pomerol. The palate holds onto that structure and grip (I wonder if it underwent a longer maceration than normal?). With lightly spiced red fruit and hints of bacon fat, this L'Evangile is now at its peak. There is old Pineau, and then there is something like this. Château de Beaulon's Collection Privée Blanc comes from the remarkable 1985 vintage and has evolved for more than three decades into a wine of almost astonishing depth and complexity. Built around Sémillon with Sauvignon, it has moved far beyond the familiar realm of Pineau des Charentes, developing layer upon layer of preserved citrus, dried apricot, honey, exotic spice, vanilla and deeply concentrated fruit. The texture is immense, the finish seemingly endless, yet the wine retains the freshness and structure necessary to carry all that richness. At this level, the most meaningful comparison is not with other Pineau, but with the greatest mature sweet wines of Bordeaux. The depth, complexity and sheer grandeur would not feel out of place alongside a great old Sauternes or Barsac. That a wine of this age and quality remains so little known is extraordinary. This is a genuinely profound old sweet wine and one of the most remarkable bottles to emerge from the Charente.
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Haut-Brion Blanc, Pessac-Léognan (98RP, 98VN). Vinous: "The 1985 Haut-Brion Blanc is one of my favourite vintages in recent years. This bottle does not disappoint. Youthful in colour, it maintains that disarming intensity on the nose that knocks you sideways: cold wet limestone, sea cave, honeysuckle and this bottle showing a touch of quince. Previously I made comparisons towards Chablis, although this maybe too rich and decadent. The palate offers stunning balance with citrus lemon and that killer, flint-like tension that drives the finish. Ah, now we are talking Chablis! It is a phenomenal, almost effervescent, life-affirming, stellar Haut-Brion Blanc that stands alongside the 1989 as one of the best ever. (NM)" (07/2018)

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1985 Fonseca Vintage Port (93RP, 93WS, 91DC). Wine Advocate: "The 1985 Fonseca is still youthful in appearance with hardly any ageing on the rim. The nose offers kirsch, sloes and Christmas cake. With time, there are subtle notes of dried fig and dates beginning to emerge and add to the complexity. The palate is medium-bodied and beautifully balanced on the supple, rounded entry. It is not quite as complex as the aromatics, with dates and dried fig, the finish mellow and refined. It is very elegant for a Fonseca, weighty but supremely well focused. This is a fabulous Fonseca that is ready to drink now, but will age for another 30 or 40 years. (NM)" (02/2013)

Bid on this bottle of 1985 Elio Altare Barolo (92WS). Wine Spectator: "Rich and elegant, with generous floral and berry aromas and flavors supported by-rather than hidden by-the tannins. One of the most elegant Barolos we've tried, long and pure. 606 cases made." (01/1990)

Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1985 Graham's Vintage Port (97DC, 96RP, 96WS, 94JS). Decanter: "Probably the best wine from a good, ripe though rather variable vintage: still deep at the centre with a thin tawny rim; lovely ripe plummy aromas, open but still brooding with more to reveal; ripe and fleshy on the palate with glorious plum and cherry fruit backed by firm ripe tannins leading to a powerful finish. Ready to drink now and will keep and develop in bottle for another thirty years at least! (RM)" (09/2021)

The 1985 Château de Beaulon Collection Privée Rouge is one of the most extraordinary mature sweet wines we have encountered. Produced from Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc and allowed to evolve for more than three decades, it bears almost no resemblance to conventional Pineau des Charentes. The wine has become immensely deep and concentrated, with layers of stewed dark fruit, prune, fig, honey, exotic spice, gingerbread and polished oak unfolding across an almost impossibly rich texture. There is enormous power here, but also balance, freshness and a remarkable sense of completeness. If there is any meaningful point of comparison, it is with very old Vintage Port, whose profound richness, density and complexity after decades of evolution offer perhaps the closest analogue. Even then, Beaulon remains entirely its own thing. This is an utterly singular wine, monumental in scale yet beautifully composed, and one of the most compelling demonstrations of just how extraordinary mature Pineau can become.
Bid on this bottle of 1985 Heitz Cellar Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (90JG). John Gilman: "David Heitz’s 1985 “Napa” bottling of cabernet sauvignon is a very good example of the vintage and a relative bargain out there in the auction world, as I see this appear from time to time. The wine offers up a fine nose of black cherries, lovely spice tones, a very good base of soil, tobacco leaf, eucalyptus and a nice touch of cigar ash in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, complex and full-bodied, with a good core of fruit, melted tannins, still good acidity and a long, well-balanced finish. This does not offer up the same complexity as the single vineyard bottlings from Heitz, but it has depth, stuffing and plenty of class." (05/2021)
