The Reed Vineyard was one of the original Calera plantings back in 1975, and this is the coolest of their vineyards, as it has a north by northeast exposition. Due to its slightly cooler microclimate, this is typically the last pinot to be picked each year at Calera and is the most red fruity of the various single vineyard bottlings. The 1997 is drinking very well, as it offers up a complex nose of strawberries, vinesmoke, fresh herbs, a bit of rusty soil tones, hung game and a touch of toffee in the upper register. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and complex, with a fairly jammy palate impression and good length and grip on the meltingly tannic finish. A very good bottle for current drinking and really a quintessential example of today’s Calera pinots.

Another set of tasting notes showing the consistently classic markings of this block. Highly floral nose, exotic Asian spice, elegantly fruited, with wonderful purity and persistence. Time and time again in this lineup, wines from Reed were just intoxicating with their distinctive aromatic profile, and this one is no exception.

Notes

Calera's Reed Vineyard consists of just a little under 4.5 acres that were planted to Pinot Noir in 1975. Formerly forested, these north and northeast facing upper and lower blocks features the deepest and darkest soils with more clay, and thus fruit is slower to ripen. It was named after William (Bill) G. Reed, Sr. one of Calera's original founding partners and close friend to Josh Jenson. Reed Vineyard Pinots are typically exotically perfumed, light in body, with a soft, supple mouthfeel. The cool microclimate makes for wines with naturally fresh acidity and the structure to develop nicely with age.
