Reviewed April 2025Notably ripe yet fresh aromas include those of poached plum, newly turned earth and a whiff of dark currant. The sleek, delicious and nicely vibrant flavors possess both good detail and evident minerality on the balanced and solidly persistent finish. Better depth would be desirable so a few years of keeping would help. (Drink starting 2029)

From a walled premier cru with a portion of the vineyard dating to 1920, the 2023 Santenay 1er Cru Clos Tavannes is slightly deeper hued than the 2022 and shows a less exuberant nose of red and blue fruits, lavender, violets, and flowers. It's soft and medium-bodied, with a rounded mouthfeel and a good finish. There are roughly 1,083 cases produced. Drink 2026-2036.

The 2023 Santenay Clos Tavannes was a clear standout in tasting through a recent lineup of 2023s from La Pousse D'Or, and I couldn't help but snap up a few cases. Coming from the walled Clos of Tavannes, 1/3 of which was planted all the way back in 1929, this is youthful bottle is just beginning to show its best colors! It's full of ripe red fruits and earthen undertones. It's sleek, aromatically enrapturing, and all around delicious. What a wonderful introduction to Benoit's style of winemaking without totally crushing your monthly wine budget at our special price of $75!
