The Maker's Mark Private Selection program has long been a staple on our shelves. It's one of the few barrel programs where we get to truly affect the outcome, but also one of the most nerve-wracking barrel picks because you have to commit to something based on a lot of assumptions. Flavors don't really work in a linear way, so even with the most careful planning, the stave aging process can be tricky to predict. I've absolutely adored our picks over the years, noting, of course, that this is one of the products on the shelf that benefits greatly from additional aeration. Still, I always have this nervous energy when picking and finally tasting the blend. I've also kind of pigeonholed myself because there are certain flavor profiles I know I like and end up coming back to again and again. That's why tasting this release has been SO refreshing. This one was picked out at the distillery by my colleagues in the spring of 2026. All I had to do was show up and taste it when it landed. And damn, they've done something I'd never do, and I'm so glad they did. I'm always going heavy on the American oak, but here they've balanced a drop of that with the spicier elements, which I worried would contrast too overtly with the Maker's sweetness. Instead, everything has turned out to be in perfect balance. Let's give it a taste. The color is a classic tawny (1.5). The nose starts big on the woodsy spice, but with air deepens into a potpourri of dried stone fruit: apricots, cherries, and candied peaches, plus their pits, buckets of roasted almonds, and charred wood. It continues to grow: dark chocolate, hazelnut, sandalwood, black tea, sarsaparilla. On the palate, it's deeply sweet, almost liqueur-like at first, offering cherry compote and demerara syrup, followed by roasted wood and big, dark spices that build and build at the end. It's a bit of a roller coaster, and I can tell we're still just at the beginning of a much bigger trip. The last pour will be the best pour in this special bottle. Glad to see I have colleagues with such great taste. No big surprises there.
