Pale lemon yellow. An attractive saline and mineral nose. Lovely vibrant fruit with a little sunshine round the edges, a warmer feel at the finish but the Chablisian qualities decline to move over entirely. Fine long finish. NB Just racked and sulphured, so this could in fact be even better than it was showing. Drink from 2027-2032. Tasted Jun 2024.

The 2023 Montmains from Guillaume Michel is utterly classic in personality and proportions this year. The beautiful bouquet offers up a complex blend of lemon, tart pear, wet stone minerality, a bit of chalk dust and a topnote of dried flowers. On the palate the wine is crisp, full-bodied, long and complex, with a lovely core of fruit, fine detail, lovely balance and a long, mineral-driven and precise finish. (Drink between 2027-2050)

Michel’s 2023 Chablis 1er Cru Montmain, bottled in November 2024, derives from southeast-facing vines growing in clay-rich soils that tend to bring roundness. Wafting from the glass with aromas of acacia, green apple, lemon zest and honeysuckle, it’s medium-bodied, bright and lively, with good focus and immediate charm. Guillaume Michel presides over this 25-hectare estate, with most of the land located in the historic part of Chablis. This estate has long been a reference point for tank-fermented and -matured Chablis, a style that the Michel family helped to popularize in the 1980s. Intense and tensile wines are the calling card here, pure and unadorned in style.(KK)

Note: from Montmains proper. A markedly more floral-suffused nose features notes of essence of pear, lemon zest, iodine and a hint of algae. The caressing and solidly concentrated medium-bodied flavors possess just enough energy to avoid being plodding on the reasonably refreshing, clean and moderately dry finale.

Notes

Bill Nanson Burgundy Report: "A cooler width of more complex citrus aroma. More fluid, melting and mineral too – now we’re getting there. Such a delicious finish!"(01/2025)
