Almost a year on from my initial taste of this superb new Gran Selezione from Tenuta di Arceno, the co-fermented Sangiovese and Colorino from a high elevation vineyard is showing some lovely red fruit aromas – even a hint of blueberry – along with crushed rock and peppery spice. Incredibly vibrant, concentrated and zingy, it offers a saline mouthful of juicy dark berries which soak up the alcohol with ease, subtly framed by wood, herbs, graphite and earth. It ends with a floral and blueberry lift and a sprinkle of spice. Sapidity and verticality are the order of the day here. (JB)

Supple and harmonious, this expressive red exudes beautifully defined aromas and flavors of black cherry, black currant and violet. The fruit and floral elements converge on the long aftertaste, where a mineral note emerges. Sangiovese and Colorino. Drink now through 2042. (BS)

The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Campolupi sports a magenta color in the glass and offers ripe notes of menthol, black cherries, pine needles, and violets. With a medium to full-bodied frame, it saturates the palate with ripe tannins, mouthwatering salinity, and even acidity coming through for a long and slightly warming finish. While I’m personally leaning toward the Riserva as my favorite wine in the range, this has a lot to offer and should drink and age well over the coming 10-15 years. (AF)

Notes

Campolupi made its debut with the 2021 vintage, drawing on Tenuta di Arceno's high Sangiovese blocks at roughly 550 meters. The name means “field of wolves,” a reference to their return to the surrounding hills. Sangiovese and Colorino are co-fermented for this Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Decanter's assessment of the 2021 emphasizes dark fruit, floral lift and a pronounced saline edge, with freshness running through the wine's concentration. Wine Spectator follows black cherry and violet into a mineral finish, while the JebDunnuck.com review describes ripe tannins within a medium- to full-bodied frame.
