Reviewed September 2020Fabulous aromas of crushed berries, wet earth, spice and dried meat. Some black pepper as well. It’s full-bodied and layered with plenty of fruit and a juicy finish. A gorgeous young Taurasi. One for the cellar, but delicious already.

The sort of Southern Italian red that you could serve confidently with a grilled T-bone steak, the Donnachiara 2016 Taurasi is a rich and beautifully structured wine that reveals layers of red cherry, blackberry, spice, leather and tobacco. The wine shows momentum and staying power thanks to the integrity of the fruit, its freshness and those classic Taurasi tannins. This release of some 10,000 bottles is a powerful but well-balanced wine. (ML)

The nose in the 2016 Taurasi shows masses of ripe blue and black fruits, as rich, exotic spices give way to hints of orange citrus and violet-tinged florals. On the palate, velvety textures coast across the senses, delivering cool-toned black fruits and minerals, with refreshing acidity adding lift. The finish is medium in length and buzzing with energy, resonating on tart blackberry and cherry with a saline-mineral twang. I craved more depth here and a bit less oak, yet the purity is admirable, making the 2016 Donnachiara Taurasi very easy to like right out of the gate. (EG)
