This lovely little barrel was selected in the winter of 2025 and bottled in late spring of 2026, just before its 8th birthday. This beautiful style from Heaven Hill is totally distinct from the others we see, offering another window into the massive operation that represents the second-largest stocks of bourbon in the world. Within the structure of this massive operation, the Heaven Hill single barrel seems to be the most elusive. We've technically selected another almost a year prior to the release of this barrel, but it seems to have never been bottled, so this is the first and maybe the last we'll ever see. Heaven Hill's barrel program is in flux and always changing. It's one of the best out there, but we sometimes lose opportunities that we love, like the recently retired Rittenhouse barrel program. Every year is a new surprise with our wonderful friends at Heaven Hill, and we'll keep showing up to see what they do next. Let's have a taste! The color is a classical burnished hue (1.1). The nose is zesty and inviting with sweet peach skins, honey-covered oats, tangerine peel, light-roast Arabica, and complex sweet herbs, woodruff & hyssop. The palate is extremely open and drinkable with a beautiful medium body and a rich roasted pecan backbone. The sweet herbs and stone fruit compete on the palate, but ultimately it's extremely well balanced and opulent without being overwrought. This is some of the most elegant bourbon we've ever had grace our glasses and a welcome departure from the big, oaky, intense style that we're often getting these days. Maybe it leans slightly into the aperitif styles, but isn't at all lacking in character. A wonderful pick I'm proud to get behind.

Notes

This is a genuine first for K&L, and one I've been hoping we'd eventually get the chance to do. Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond has deep roots at the distillery, tracing its lineage back to the original Old Heaven Hill Bottled-in-Bond released in 1939, just four years after the Shapira family began filling barrels. That whiskey became the best-selling bourbon in Kentucky, and Bottled-in-Bond has remained central to Heaven Hill's identity ever since. We've selected hundreds of barrels from the gorgeous rickhouses on the Hill behind Bardstown. The authentic corregated metal warehouses produce some of the Kentucky's very best, but this is the first time we've ever selected a single barrel from the namesake brand for K&L. This incredible barrel is so distinctive and delicious we simply couldn't pass up the rare opportunity to see this classic Heaven Hill profile without the winnowing effect of a larger batch. For a distillery that produces more Bottled-in-Bond whiskey than any other American producer, that makes this an especially exciting barrel selection for us. Nearly 8 Years Old Heaven Hill Bourbon with the full weight of one of Kentucky's great whiskey traditions behind it. We've done plenty of bottled in bond single barrels before, but never one like this before. Distilled on May 21st of 2018 aged on the 4th floor of historic warehouse k on Heaven Hill's Bardstown campus and bottled in the Spring of 2016 at a bottled in bond 100 proof.
