The 2023 Chianti Classico is endowed with exceptional class and purity, despite the challenges of the growing season. Black cherry, cedar, liquorice, spice, tobacco and menthol fill out the layers effortlessly. All this needs is a bit of time to soften the contours. The 2023 spent 16 months in cask. (AG)

With fewer grapes on the vine and persistent heat throughout September, Monteraponi’s harvest was earlier than usual, wrapping up at the end of September. Given the density of fruit and tannins, the annata saw a couple of months longer in wood. Tasted just after bottling, it is immediately and generously redolent of summer pudding, sun-warmed black and redcurrants and woodland scrub. In relative terms, this sports more stuffing, chew and dense tannins than usual but ultimately is still midweight and bright. Fruit purity is admirably preserved, and a slight tartness adds to its appetising character. (MM)

The organic Monteraponi 2023 Chianti Classico reflects the character of the vintage with ripe fruit, dark cherry and plum. There is a point of softness on the palate, and you taste the raw pulpy nature of Sangiovese's skins and grapes. The finish is soft and accessible, with sweet earthiness too. (ML)

Notes

The 2023 Monteraponi Chianti Classico (DOCG) is a chiseled, fiercely traditionalist, and high-altitude masterpiece that epitomizes the structural brilliance of Radda in Chianti. Michele Braganti crafts this uncompromising estate blend—predominantly Sangiovese ($\sim 95\%$) with a splash of Canaiolo ($\sim 5\%$)—from organically farmed vineyards carved into rugged, stone-filled amphitheaters sitting up to 570 meters above sea level. Rooted deeply in pure alberese (limestone) and galestro (schist) soils, the fruit is spontaneously fermented in unlined concrete vats with long macerations, then aged strictly in large, neutral Slavonian and French oak botti. Michele avoids any modern oak makeup or international blending to protect the wine's raw, linear energy.
