One of my favorite places to visit in the south of France is the seaside region of Picpoul de Pinet. Along the Mediterranean, lagoons are dotted with oyster farms and little shacks where you can settle in with a platter of freshly shucked oysters. Few things go better with those pearls of the sea than a crisp, citrus-driven Picpoul. It's a pretty ideal way to spend an afternoon.
The Montmassot has been a staple of ours for many years, and it remains one of the best white wine values we offer from the Languedoc. We keep coming back to it because it's fresh, nervy and practically made for seafood. It also makes a terrific alternative to Sancerre and other French Sauvignon Blancs, especially when you're looking for something refreshing at a more approachable price.
This year's Montmassot delivers classic lemony notes, a touch of lime leaf, a hint of salinity and a clean, vibrant finish. It's a terrific aperitif, a natural partner for oysters and just the thing to have on hand whenever you need a lively, refreshing white for dinner.
Notes
The appellation of Picpoul de Pinet covers about 3,000 acres just off the coast of the Mediterranean. It is famous for two things: oysters and this wine of origin, Picpoul. Picpoul itself is the grape and means "lip stinger," which has become a running joke in our Hollywood store. Whenever we taste a new Picpoul, we ask each other, "does this pic your poul?"
