A wine with aromatic beauty: perfumed and sexy. Full body, super velvety tannins and long and delicious finish. Wonderful intensity and decadence to this. 100% Merlot. Drink or hold. But too good now. (JS)

A pure expression of Merlot, the 2010 Casalferro is a plump and modern wine teaming with black cherry and bold blackberry intensity. It makes a statement, thanks to the warm renderings of exotic spice and leather that fill in the back. That said, the wine’s style is by no means over extracted or over-the-top. In fact, it shows medium weight with polished tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025. (ML)

The 2010 Casalferro is 100% Merlot. Tar, licorice, smoke, iron and a host of dark nuances give the 2010 its sense of weight and gravitas. There is a lot going on in the glass in this powerful, imposing wine. (AG)

A sheen of resinous oak lends a flashy feel to this modern-style red, revealing some substance underneath. Offers pretty, glossy cherry, raspberry and plum flavors, with a long finish and a spicy aftertaste. Merlot. Best from 2015 through 2024. 500 cases imported. (BS)

Casalferro is Ricasoli’s exploration of Merlot at Gaiole in Chianti. The 2010 is entirely Merlot from the estate’s named vineyard, part of the research Francesco Ricasoli began after taking charge of the property in the 1990s. The wine is bottled under the Toscana IGT designation. The producer records a cold, snowy winter and rainy spring in 2010, followed by a warm summer. Those winter and spring reserves kept drought from becoming a concern, while cooler nights arrived toward harvest. Merlot picking ran from September 2 to 24, and the wine was bottled in September 2012.
