Gorgeous, the 2023 Chardonnay is from 1984-planted, own-rooted vines planted at 2,200-feet elevation. Incredible barrel-spiced aromatics open to a full-bodied, generously layered, concentrated palate of mineral-driven gravelly texture and flavors of apple skin, baked peach, and brioche. Rounded, with bristling underlying acidity, it has weight with freshness and finesse, chalky in texture with a long finish. Hold and drink 2028-2035.

Vinous
The 2023 Chardonnay Mt. Harlan neatly balances cool-toned acids with creamy bass notes. Direct and focused, the 2023 is all about precision. Fresh apricot fruit and toasty spice notes open first while crushed-stone-like minerality races through from start to finish. Floral top notes begin to blossom with aeration, leading to a mouthwatering finish. There’s an admirable sense of place and distinctiveness here. (BN)

Wine Advocate
The 2024 Chardonnay Mount Harlan emerges from a trio of blocks in the estate's western portion, planted in 1997. Consistent with recent vintages, it balances a classically rich, textural style of Californian Chardonnay while delivering purity, tension and chalky grip throughout. It opens with green and yellow orchard fruits, marshmallows and a pleasant touch of new wood on the nose, then moves to a dense, compact mouthfeel. It closed with a refreshing and impressively spry finish given the power that preceded it.
Notes
Calera founder Josh Jensen established the estate in 1975 after working in Burgundy, choosing a remote site in the Gabilan Mountains for its limestone-rich soils. This 2023 Estate Chardonnay comes from Mt. Harlan, the high-elevation California appellation that surrounds Calera’s vineyards.
