Reviewed January 2026The 2023 Pinot Noir Estate San Andreas Fault is complex and dynamic in the glass. Wild cherry and strawberry fruit lend notable freshness as this mid-weight, understated Pinot gradually opens with a bit of coaxing. The 2023 possesses a lovely inner perfume to match its gracious, super-refined personality. (AG)

A blend meant to show the whole vineyard, drawn from around 30 of Hirsch’s 60 parcels across the estate on the far Sonoma Coast – a site the San Andreas fault runs directly through, hence the name. Deliberately assembled towards the softer, less tannic side to drink well young. Fully destemmed, as all Hirsch reds have been since 2019. The shortest élevage in the range at 11 months, around 30% new oak. Block 17, from the heart of Raschen Ridge, makes up about 7% of the blend. This vintage of the San Andreas is incredible. The wine is light and juicy, with a complex core of wet stone, violets, forest floor and a twist of orange peel and noble bitters. Soft, silky tannins, a clean line and a pithy, saline finish. It has an easy-going, drink-now feel – the more approachable end of Hirsch – but is very well made and delicious. (ACQ) 17.5/20
Notes
David Hirsch planted his first vines overlooking the Pacific Ocean in 1980, establishing a pioneering vineyard on the far western Sonoma Coast. Just half a mile from the San Andreas Fault, the estate encompasses a remarkable patchwork of soils, slopes, and exposures, farmed as individual blocks. The 2023 San Andreas Fault is Hirsch’s flagship estate Pinot Noir, bringing those diverse parcels together to express the vineyard’s coastal setting and complex geology.
