The 2022 Al Passo, the estate's Sangiovese-based blend, is once again terrific. Bold, pliant and generous, the 2022 is impeccably done. Ripe plum, cedar, tobacco, dried herbs and crushed flowers take shape in a wine that marries the richness of the year with a good bit of energy. All the elements are so well balanced. (AG)

Al Passo takes its name from a circular woodland at the highest point of Tolaini's Vallenuova vineyard, in the Chianti Classico area. An Etruscan tomb more than 2,500 years old lies within the woods. The 2022 is bottled as Toscana IGT and combines 34% Sangiovese with 33% each Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Fruit is selected in the vineyard and again at the winery before whole, destemmed berries enter stainless-steel tanks. The producer's 2022 sheet records 20 days of skin contact and 14 months in French oak vessels and barriques, including six months on the fine lees.
