Notes
The wonderful Craigellachie distillery is slowly becoming more mainstream, but we still see only miniscule amounts being bottled by the owners. Founded in the tiny town of the same name, it stands just steps from the famous Highlander Inn, one of Speyside's best bars, and the lovely Craigellachie Hotel. While just over the river from the famous Easter Elchies estate, the unassuming facility seems far less aristocratic. It's a serious, no-frills malt production facility with the '70s style roll up windows in the still house, a bustling active campus with red doors, and whitewashed walls. The John Dewar & Sons name beams red from the top of the main building, signaling Craigellachie's essential role in Dewar's blended whiskies. Despite the industrial setting, the malt distilled here is far from plain or pedestrian. The fat, onion-shaped stills and nearly horizontal lyne arms feed into four beautiful worm tubs creating a fat, complex spirit that's extremely distinctive. It seems to hold its character particularly well up against sherry but can also shine in less active oak. This wonderful sherry butt No. HL21170 was selected specifically to commemorate the launch of Hunter Laing's new Islay single malt Ardnahoe. It was distilled in 2007 and bottled without coloring, chill filtration or other additives at the classic Old Malt Cask 100 proof. It's sold exclusively by K&L Wine Merchants in the US.
