Sometimes, you know that something is really good and probably really expensive just at the very first whiff. This is definitely one of those for me, this cognac just smelled absolutely divine, with the depth and sophistication I'm always looking for. It's crazy to me that this is 60+ years old, but it explains the extraordinary depth presented here. There's an elegance but also power to the nose, the iron fist wrapped in a velvet glove showing itself here. While there is a bit of freshness left on the almost tropical fruit, there's also a round nuttiness in the background that shows the age as you look deeper and deeper in to the eye of this creature. Besides the fruit, there's some gingerbread and graham crackers along with long line of rancio running through the whole nose. The palate is dense and almost chewy, more of the oak showing than the nose. There's more tropical fruits, dusty leather, nuttiness, and an intense punch of a savory bacon-fat sort of note on the finish. This is so freaking good, I can't even stand it. This is the quintessential gift for the Cognac lover that you just can't quite ever seem to impress, this is something that has stories to tell as you sit down with the bottle and glass by glass, it'll whisper those stories to you. All you have to do is listen.

Notes

A true rarity from a house defined by heritage and precision, this Single Cask Cognac from Deux Familles embodies the soul of Grande Champagne. The brand—born from a transatlantic partnership between the Beth and Nau families—seeks out hidden treasures like this: a Cognac distilled in 1962 by Julien André and aged over 60 years in an 80-year-old Limousin oak cask. The result is a premier cru masterpiece, bottled unblended and untouched. On the nose, it exudes Grande Champagne’s hallmark minerality and tension. The palate is opulent yet fresh: notes of passion fruit, pineapple, Christmas pudding, Dominican tobacco, and a rancio-laced finish that recalls fine aged rum. Best served neat. A once-in-a-generation release.
