From the red volcanic soils at Woori Yallock but with the addition this year of some Gingin and 548 clones. Oakridge have hit a home run with this and the Aqueduct Block Henk Vineyard Chardonnays in '23. A simply gorgeous and pure-fruited nose with its combination of perfectly ripened orchard fruits, pink grapefruit and white flowers. The palate is simultaneously powerful and restrained and the finish is tensile and very long. Just in case I've left you in any doubt, I liked this. A lot. (PR)

Very linear and mineral-driven aromas of lemon pith, phosphorous, lime leaves and pastry. The palate is medium-bodied with laser-like acidity and underlying tension that will resolve over time. It sits on the edge of reduction and shows the effects of a cool vintage.

The Yarra Valley is the leading contender for Australia’s premier winegrowing region for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. The area’s cool maritime climate produces wines of elegance and finesse, and the Oakridge “Henk Vineyard” Chardonnay is a gorgeous example of the lean and focused style of the region. This is one of the coolest winegrowing regions in Australia — cooler even than many in New Zealand or California — and Chardonnay from the Yarra has remarkable tension in the glass, with racy acidity and fresh lemon zest aromatics, which the Oakrdige “Henk Vineyard” clearly exemplifies. This is a single vineyard wine, where the slopes are north-facing – ideal in the Southern Hemisphere for optimal ripeness. The grapes are handpicked and whole bunch pressed directly into 500L neutral French oak puncheons, followed by 14 months on the fine lees. Zesty citrus, Granny Smith apple and blanched almond notes dominate the nose, and brisk acidity carries the wine into a very clean, refreshing finish. Named the Halliday Wine Companion’s Best Value Australian Winery in 2024, Oakridge consistently produces wines with outstanding value, and this wine is very much included. For anyone looking for an unoaked style of Chardonnay, with a focus on vibrant flavors and bright palate feel, this is a winner that really overdelivers at its modest price point. Very delicious now, especially with chilled seafood or soft cheeses, the wine also has the taut structure and density of fruit to hold on for several more years of aging.

Super pretty on the nose, a little bit of oak somewhere back there but mostly crisp green apples and pithy lemons. The palate is really similar, very crisp with a really nice line of acid through the whole thing, and the lemon is more lemon curd, a creamier lemon than the nose. The time on the lees has given this that creamy note as well as a really deluxe mouthfeel making this drink super decadently for just $25. This is really fantastic bottle of Chardonnay for people who want a little bit of oak but without all that butter that you can get sometimes, there's great mouthfeel and roundness, but no butter. Really impressive at this price.

Notes

The Yarra Valley is Victoria’s oldest wine region, established in the 1830s. Located only an hour’s drive from the heart of Melbourne, the region is one of the southernmost appellations of the Australian mainland. Proximity to the Southern Ocean moderates the climate, allowing varieties like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to thrive. Oakridge is a benchmark producer in the region, crafting elegant cool-climate wines since 1978. Under Chief Winemaker David Bicknell, Oakridge embraces minimal intervention and sustainable viticulture, crafting wines with clarity, balance, and site expression. Their meticulous approach has earned them numerous accolades, including the Halliday Wine Companion’s Best Value Winery in 2024 and a top ten spot in the Real Review’s 2025 Australian Wineries of the Year.
