The 2023 Gigondas Les Hauts De Montmirail is cut from the same cloth yet brings a touch more Syrah character in its darker berries, peppery herbs, graphite, and crushed stone-like aromatics. It's full-bodied, concentrated, has remarkable purity, and a gorgeous finish. This cuvée is 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and the rest Mourvèdre that’s from higher elevation, terraced parcels. It was destemmed and aged in 50% new French oak casks.

Grown on calcareous soils, this GSM blend presents a deeply earthy, almost meaty nose, with blackberry, black licorice, wild herbs, and violets creating a captivating bouquet. The palate is lush yet balanced, with acidity that lifts dark cherry, cassis, and blackberry flavors, all framed by a soft stony finish. (ACC)

This has good depth of fruit, with menthol-spiked blackberry and raspberry flavour. It's considerably more concentrated than many this year, and also very well balanced, with good acidity, moderate alcohol, fine tannin, good concentration and a long finish. Very good. Pure and fine. In conversion to organic. (MW)

There's plenty of ripeness -- blackberry, licorice and plum -- atop the iron bedrock, with appealing meatiness throughout. The tannins are ripe in feel, keeping a gentle hold on the salt-streaked finish, marked by plum skin bitterness. Shows impressive depth, complexity and drinkability. Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. Reaching into a deeper dimension of complexity, Brusset's Hauts de Montmirail captures everything I love about top-tier Gigondas. Sourced from higher-elevation parcels, the wine showcases intense black cherry, blackberry, and pipe tobacco, all lifted by the signature garrigue of the region. Aromas of bay leaf, wild thyme, and a hint of lavender add nuance and perfume. One of the finest Gigondas on our shelves right now. Enjoy it now with a quick decant, or let it reward your patience with a few years in the cellar.

I find Brusset's "Les Hauts" more brooding in style compared to the "Tradition." The wine has a deeper, fuller nose of both red and black fruit with hints of black olive and pepper. The palate is round and full with darker fruit flavors and a bit more weight. It's a compact and nuanced Gigondas with a lengthy finish.

I don't know what they're putting in the soil in Gigondas but it seems that the recent new releases coming out of this southern Rhone Valley sub-region have been top notch. Enter Domaine Brusset. Established in 1947 by Andre Brusset in Carianne, the Domaine farms 70 hectares across Gigondas, Carianne, Rasteau, Cote-du-Rhone, and Ventoux. Though they have White Grenache, Viognier, Roussanne, and Clairette, 90% of their production is red - Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and Carignan. Certified HVE and organic. The 2023 Domaine Brusset Les Hauts De Montmirail Gigondas is a serious wine with great structure and... A blend of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvèdre, the Les Hauts is deep, rich, savory, and gamey, leading with the more powerful Syrah and Mourvèdre grapes. Blackberry, blueberry, chocolate, round out the fruits. This wine sees French oak, some new, giving it sweet spice and complexity. This is a great selection for that day you decide to fire up the grill!

Notes

Domaine Brusset, established in 1947 by André Brusset, has grown from its roots in Cairanne into one of the benchmark producers of the Southern Rhône, with holdings across five appellations and a strong reputation for both Cairanne and Gigondas bottlings. Les Hauts de Montmirail, sourced from terraced vineyards beneath the Dentelles de Montmirail, is a blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah grown on clay and rocky soils with low yields of just 25 hl/ha. Each variety is vinified separately with cold pre-fermentation, temperature control, and daily pigeage, then matured in a mix of French oak casks (some new) and vat, depending on the vintage. Deeply colored and boldly structured, the wine offers layers of blackberry, spice, and dark chocolate with firm tannins and aging potential of 10 years or more.
