The Hampden Great House is the quintessential limited edition yearly rum release. The fact that every single bottle of this incredible spirit doesn't get snatched up immediately on release is a testament to how immature Jamaican rum connoisseurship truly is. If you're a fan of full flavored malts or super aged bourbon, there's no reason tropically aged high ester Jamaican rum shouldn't be in your repertoire. While the flavors aren't exactly the same in either product the quality and the experience that's delivered is truly comparable. And this beautiful blend represents a departure from previous batches as it includes 4 variety of different marques rather than the typical two. The rums aren't old, but remember 3 years in Jamaica is like 6 in Kentucky or 10 in Scotland. In the blend they've got 50% 3 Year LFCH 2021, 20% 4 Year LFCH 2020, 15% 6 Year HGML 2018, 15% 3 Year DOK 2021. Let's have a taste! The color is a copper (1.0). The color is a copper (1.0). The nose explodes out of the glass with a bevy of maritime and fruity aromas. Sweet plum syrup, cloves, tar, salty seagrass, lemon zesty, licorice, camphor, sandalwood. It's stupendously complex. On the palate it's almost numbingly powerful offering mace, cinnamon, sweet red berries, rubber and roasted vanilla. With water though it relents and opens with an inviting softness. This is a powerful and complex rum, but offers an opportunity to cross over in a major way. A very special one.
